Title: For those that name their bikes...
Post by: twowheeladdict on September 19, 2021, 11:22:10 AM
Does it make it harder to part with them?

I have never named a possession so am curious.  For me the more $$$ I dump into a bike makes it harder to part with because you never recoup but a fraction of the extra money spent.

I think if I started naming my bikes girls names my wife would get nervous.

Don't know why...but I have always named my bikes...The Yellow Horse...Moby Dick - The Great White Whale...The Root Beer Float...The Racing Rhino...The White Lion...the list goes on an on...    But it does not make it harder to part with them...at least for me...just another inanimate object in the end...

Here is the "Root Beer Float", for example -

1978 Honda GL1000 "Naked" Gold Wing...in all it's former glory!! :thumb:

I don't think it makes it harder specifically, but for me at least it is a way of thinking that already makes it hard to part.
I pretty much never part with a good thing, as long as it still runs.

At the age of 58, I've owned 6 cars; the current is a 2002 Mini Cooper S (Marian) with 228K on it, and I'll drive her until she dies.
I've had more bikes, but not a lot more, and the same applies.  My main bike was a 1993 Ducati M900 Monster (Patina), that I rode daily for 24 years and 265K miles, until she got wrecked -- otherwise I'd still be riding her, again until she dies.
I have 3 scooters I've owned for between 30 and 35 years, and don't plan to let go of.

So it's not that it is harder to let go of things I've named; more that I name things that I don't intend to let go of.

Now I am starting to understand why some guys refer to their better half as "the wife", and vice versa.   :thewife:

I name them, but it doesn't make us any "closer"

CX100 =  "The X"
LMIII   =  "Tre"
Triumph Tiger = "Douglas" (because I flipped a house on Douglas St. and bought the Tiger)
I don't have a name for the Tenere 700 yet. Any suggestions?

I named my Kawasaki W650 "KATE" .    for :  Kawasaki - looks like Trimuph - some "K" and some "T"

But I'd sell it for what I got in it tomorrow if ya want it.

Or trade it for a RE-dirt bike.

It's human nature to personify something.  Look at what humans do with pets.  Vehicles evoke that type of response when you spend a lot of time caring and feeding it.  😳  🤦‍♂️  😁

I was thinking about getting something like this in the near future...(...or maybe a Kawasaki 300 Versys)

Nothing wrong with the Himalayan.  I had a multi-week trip to New England with the truck and needed a bike that could go 70 mph but was light enough to ride on the rack behind the truck.  Himalayans are rare right now so almost recouped all the money I spent on it.  Bought a KLX300SM for the trip.

The day I bought the Himalayan I also test rode the Versys 300.  Two entirely different motorcycles.  If you really like one, you won't like the other.

Another Himalayan could be in my future.

My V-Strom was 'Sleipnir'.

My Norge was 'Niccolo'.

My Stelvio was 'Caboto'.

My Griso is 'Ascari'.

I'm waiting for the new Indian Roadmaster to tell me what its name is.

The names have had no effect on whether they are kept or sold/retired - but I feel a pang whenever one is gone...

Hi all,                                                                                     9-23-21

Sometimes we name a bike for obvious reasons.  My '15 Cali 1400 (red) is a work of art just sitting there.  Also, after a long ride when I turn off the ignition it moans...hence Moaning Lisa.

Be well, stay well,
DougG

Phil B: In a throw away society, pretty impressive numbers Phil.

1993 Ducati M 900 265 K miles, 24 years ownership.  Which equals yearly average of 11,041 miles.   This deserves recognition and kudos, especially if you purchased new and put all the miles on.  Not too shabby on the Mini S either.   :thumb:  While I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time I don't put a name on them.  Sometimes when they challenge my mechanical skills or cost me more than I think they should, I call them names, but that is different.

I've had lots of cats and lots of bikes. Like my cats, no names. Cats are all "cat" and bikes are all "bikes". None of them come when they're called anyway.

Because the only job it ever did was take Annís terrier Eddie, out for his walk in the forest.

I named my Guzzi L'Altra Donna...
My wife feels like she is always competing with her and that I pay her more attention, you know, take her on long rides, wash and lubricate her, buy new clothes (gear) to wear when I'm with her.....
My wife calls it the Bitch in the garage....
