Title: 2014 cal 1400 low fuel light
Post by: honsfun1 on September 24, 2021, 07:54:04 PM
Got a low fuel light 1 bar when starting today.  i knew there was more fuel in the tank than was indicated. Went to fill the tank only took 2 gallons. I rode apx 25 miles or 1/2 hr  before the low fuel corrected and the level reached 6 bars. Any ideas what the problem is and how to resolve??/

The 1400's lay over pretty hard on the side stand . don't t rust the bars until your upright and cruising . Aside from that , they have a really generous reserve. If your on the last bar and the reserve light comes on , stop and take a look in the tank. It's literally still half full. I've done 60 miles with  the light on and still had a sloshable amount of gas in the tank.

The reserve is 5 litres (1.3 US gal, 1.1 UK gal).  If you know your fuel consumption, you can work out how far you can get.

But don't call me if it doesn't work out.

On my V7III there is a delay between filling up and the light going out, I think its a distance thing rather than timed.
There are some other weird effects like if I turn the key On and push the bike forward the lights come On without the motor running.

Is there a float?  or a fuel strip?  How is the level signal sent?

Should be a sensor pod on the stick that is w/fuel pump, may be replaceable or not, been 5yrs. Look in the service man shows it.
Edit:  no it doesn't show pump.  It is in parts, blow it up big you can see it off the side of pump mount.

Mine came on today at about 140 miles - it took 3.6 gallons this time.

So, my reserve today was about 1.8ish gallons.

Theoretically, that's 220 miles per tank at 40mpg.

As pushing that particular beast uphill to a gas station simply doesn't bear
thinking about, gassing up at about 150 miles isn't a bad idea....

I've done a little bit of research on this issue. I won't swear that this is totally accurate but when my light comes on I have 1.3 gallons left. When the last bar on the gouge goes away, one gallon left. I don't trust it with my life. When I got my bike I had read that the tank 5.3 gallons. Not so, 4.7. I ran out on a trip, it took exactly 4.7 to fill it. I don't get it, this bike averages 40 mpg, my V7  does better than 50 mpg yet has a 5.5 gal tank.

The idiot light and bar graph are NOT accurate.  I stop and refuel after the last bar is not showing.  About 3 gallons go in for about 125+ miles.  Good time rehydrate, eat a snack & check the bike.  "rinse & repeat".  Best way to make mileage.
