Parts washer solvent
« on: September 22, 2021, 10:03:33 AM »
Its time for new solvent in my parts washer.  Agitene (my preferred solvent) has increased in price from $117 to $190.  Any suggestions for an alternative solvent?

How much do you need?  I have a small 3 gal parts washer, I'm using B'laster Parts Washer Solvent currently, works well, 50 state legal.  Currently about $100 for 5 gal.

Thanks for the replies.  I ordered five gallons from tractor supply for 1/3 of the Agitene price.  Well see how it works.

With a $20 disposal fee, this stuff is getting expensive.

Kerosene is about $5/gallon around here. Have used it my '50's Graymill parts washer for 30+ years. When it gets gunked up it goes into the waste oil tank at the town dump.

We have a local gas/oil quickshop type company with about 10 stations, I go to their office/warehouse complex and ask for parts cleaner solvent.  Pretty cheap (haven't needed any for a while, so don't know current cost)  It works real well.  When done with it, I have a farmer friend who uses it on his brush piles to start the fire.

Me too Larry, I know there's a very good reason not to use kero... but I can never remember what it is. I've got a pretty good filter in my cleaner that gets a lot of the gunk out with occasional service, and the rest is used to start bonfires.

Have read that kero is carcinogenic, and yes it is flammable. I wear a charcoal filter respirator and industrial solvent proof gloves. Garage door is open when using. I have started a few brush fires with the old stuff. Liquid kindling...
