What to do in winter
« on: January 04, 2022, 07:01:11 AM »
What ?

We're fortunate enough to have a walk-out basement.  All of the little motorbikes get to live in climate controlled comfort.

They get extra attention in winter - or the height of summer.  At the very least, it's the standard "once-over", and then it's a good detailing and then a ride (weather permitting)

The wife usually supervises, and I've noticed that she will get involved if I start missing a lot of spots.   :boozing: :boozing: :boozing:

A clean motorcycle is a happy motorcycle.

Ok Sir, Which one of the 4 six beautiful bikes is the most fun to own/ ride?
Rick.

THAT is a hard question. If we're 2-up (which we usually are), then it's that VStar1300 or the Harley Heritage Softail.  Both of those are comfortable, have great wind management and large saddlebags.  These are our go-to bikes in cold weather.  Add a set of crashbar chaps and heated gear and we're set.

Is the red bike in the background a Raider? I sold my Raider in the fall and really regret it.

It's a VStar1300.  1300cc water cooled belt drive.  We wore out one of these with 100K+ miles and then a truck ran over it while parked.  This 2014 model is our second one.

So Kev, you have owned a few different ADV styled bikes. Which one was your favorite and why?  Also, have you considered a V85TT?

I test rode MG85TT on two occasions.  Most recent was at the Kentucky rally.  Sloan's showed up with some demo bikes.

Having owned a Super Tenere, Versys 650 and 1000, VStrom, etc..........  I would have to say that the one that I put the most miles on was a 2014 Versys 650.  One tooth up on the front sprocket and off I went.  Everywhere.  I outfitted it with large luggage.

Interesting.  When I owned my 2011 that I personally put 30,000 miles on I would tell anyone what wanted to know that if I could only own one of the bikes in my stable it was the Versys 650.  Truly a versatile machine.  I only parted with it because the FZ-07 fit better in my truck to carry on work trips when I needed more than I could carry on the bike.

Now, I am considering the V85TT, the Vstrom 650XT Adventure, and the Aprilia Tuareg 660 as a potential future bike.

Well, that Kawasaki VN900 Classic LT had a rear caliper issue at 11,000 miles.  A bit of caliper rework and some new pads solved that issue.  Then there were missing fasteners and rattling exhaust heat shields.  Flush brake fluids, etc.

All of the others are now cleaned and detailed.  This Yamaha is the last one.

I am so thankful that I can now wrench on the bikes and clean them.  They've pretty much been sitting since mid-July.

My bike is clean and you can't polish a matte finish so I'll probably try sealing my wire wheels instead.

My wife retired, last April.  Since then, she has decided to increase her presence in the man cave, to the point that I've put her to work.

Here she is, after dragging the tire changer out and getting ready to bolt it to the floor.
She's pretty good with a tire spoon, too.

Missed this thread until today.

Mighty impressive, but I'm with Chuck.  I'll ship one each year to you in October for it to get in queue.

I'd have to live in Siberia to have a winter long enough to motivate me to do what you all do.  Kathi would say Antarctica.  :thewife:

But, mighty impressive.

I keep mine more or less clean -- with emphasis on "less" -- but do take some care in off-season in servicing and looking for AWOL or loose fasteners.  Always find some of the latter, but deserters are harder to reel in.

Hmmmmm.  Maybe instead of using my Moto Grappa Tech Days next month for servicing, etc., I could give attendees "products" and microfiber cloths (and beer) and see if they can approach your (wife's) standards.  :boozing:

Hi Chuck,

Yeah, a little tire humor.  I guess I'm not the only one playing with our nomars

On a related note, this was the first set of tires I've changed on the nomar.  I didn't have much luck mastering the nomar bar technique so I figured I'd try a Mojo Lever which worked great.
