Title: Ozark Guzzi Raid, 17-20 May 2018, Harrison Ark
Post by: LowRyter on January 27, 2018, 12:37:39 PM
Ozark Spineframe and Guzzi Raid Rally (Not-A-Rally) in Harrison Ark.

Call the Hotel Seville, 870-741-2321.  It's known to be haunted.

Book during the weekend of  17-20 May 2018 (17th is Thursday when I plan to get there, dates are flexible).

Tell them you are part of the Motorcycle Group and get 15% discount.  My Queen Room is  $80/nite.   :thumb:

This isn't a "rally" in the sense that it's organized or affiliated with this site or insured or having t shirts or anything more than just showing up on your own and seeing who's there.

Since there were interests on Wild from guys that don't own Spineframes, nor Guzis for that matter, I just left it open and called this a generic "rally". It's pointed out that "rally" might imply some type of organization.  Since many of you have not met me, the terms "organization" and "responsibility" don't associate with me.

This is just a deal about folks coming together in Harrison Ark on a particular weekend with a common interest to ride motorcycles (or not).  Mention that we're part of the motorcycle group and get a hotel discount.

What you'll find are some of the best motorcycle roads anywhere whether full-on sportsbiking or cruising.  Great scenery.   Some hidden diners and restaurants in the countryside and small towns.  Lakes and even a ferry crossing into Missouri.

The hotel is a restored 1920's era establishment.  Restaurant, courtyard and oldest bar in the county.  There are also several other name brand motels and camping the area.

So a "nottanottanotta" rally then ?

The Dust to Dawson event was started by a couple of Okies , and they still make certain that no one confuses it with any organized event .

I think we have interest from about a dozen folks between this board and the V11 LeMans board.   I am not sure how many folks have made reservation but mention that you're on a motorcycle and you should get a discount.

I dunno man.......that's like 85 miles away.

Looks like fun! It'll be the fanciest Guzzi campout I've been to in all these years.

It'll be good for Harrison too, they have been getting a little bad press lately.

I unfortunately won't be able to attend rally, however i will be in area this September. I fly and ride to different areas of the U.S. with a group I have been riding with over the last 20 years. this year we are heading to the Ozarks and plan to be in Harrison for a few
days.  Looks like we are in for some great riding in area.

I was thinking that we might go to the Diner in Oark Ark for lunch on Friday.

And lunch ride on Saturday to Mi Pueblito (Mexican) in Mountain View Ark.  And you might be interested in the Guitar Thumbpicking Workshop at the Ozark Cultural Center scheduled the same weekend.  http://www.ozarkfolkcenter.com/calendar-of-events/details.aspx?id=155899

And I am open to suggestions from the locals for better choices.  The lunch rides are approx 225-270 mile r/t depending on the route.  All roads will be twisty and scenic with some routes more challenging than others.  There is also a Ferry into Missouri across Bull Shoals Lake.  Arkansas also has recommended rides and some that route to our lunch towns  https://www.arkansas.com/motorcycling/

So far as Harrison goes, it looks like a Fiddler's Convention and Crawdad Days Music Fest is going on.  So if you had a long ride to get to Harrison and want to hang in town rather than go for lunch rides, it looks like there is plenty to do in town.  (And there's motorcycle poker run too!)

I am at the end of trip planning.  Meaning, you're on your own, there is no rally master, enter at your own risk!

Here are some maps that you can download and print (jpg).  You'll have to work your own GPS, print the maps, etc.  The routes to lunch are different, the return routes from lunch are the same.

Here are two routes to Oark.

Technical Route (Hwy 123): 155 miles to lunch, 253 miles total
(https://g3.img-dpreview.com/BD73646B15A949ABB9D933DB9B892702.jpg)

Alternate Route (Hwy 21): 120 miles to lunch, 218 miles total
(https://g2.img-dpreview.com/763D33671F0945B5B290FDEA0D0FF9D7.jpg)

Here are two routes to Mtn View

Technical Route (Hwy 341):  130 miles to lunch, 207 miles total
(https://g2.img-dpreview.com/468FD5EBA53D485EB60588DE07985905.jpg)

Peel Ferry Route:  144 miles to lunch, 222 miles total
(https://g1.img-dpreview.com/E20A232A7E2349EEAE31E26CCC0359BB.jpg)

No kidding! Last May I rode two days with a group of motovlogger friends of my son around the Ozarks. Our group broke down to 4 bikes, a Street Triple, FZ1, FJ09 and my FJR. Wrestling that pig through the twisties trying to keep up with those young guys had me exhausted by the end of the weekend.

Excerpt from my journal..

5-1-14

Got suited up in my cold wx gear, rolled Rosie out, punched the start button, and nothing. (!) Took 4 or 5 punches before the starter turned. Got to Andy’s and asked if he had some contact cleaner. Pulled the start relay, sprayed it, put it back in and it didn’t miss the rest of the trip. Booger freezing cold. Many stops for Andy to warm up. He had on long johns, bibs, chaps and Carharts. (!) His trunk hinge broke in Mo. He was walking to a hardware store and dropped like a shot duck. I thought he’d had a stroke. He said his legs were so effing cold they quit working.  Checked him for a concussion and stroke..seemed as ok as Andy gets.  Made Hermann, Mo, 425 miles today. They’d rolled up the streets, but we managed to find beer and food.

5-2-14

I woke up last night and decided if it was as cold as it was yesterday, I was turning around for home. Fortunately, it was tolerable and it looked like the sun would be out farther south. 19 was a pretty road south of Hermann. Fortunately, the Hub was booked up and we went to the  Seville, a restored 1929 hotel. Gorgeous, and cheap. The staff was outstanding, too. $2.00 draft Mother’s little helper IPA..  I’d take sweetie there in a heartbeat. Covered parking. Met Karen from Memphis who was here checking on her mother’s grave. Plays dobro in a bluegrass band, speech therapist. Bought us a round. Interesting conversation.

5-3-14

I led in the morning, and had a GREAT ride hooning around in the mountains, blowing by road blockers, etc.  It was the first time I’ve had Rosie where I could get rid of her chicken strips. 123 was a hoot. A memorable ride in perfect wx. Had late lunch at the Hub, sure glad we missed staying there.

5-4-14

Sent Karen on her way after (good) breakfast at the hotel. She said she’d be staying there every time she came back to visit her mother’s grave instead of the chain motels outside of town. I would, too. Took 62 across north Ar until we turned north and finally got on the slab. Hot hot ninetys (!) record heat, and here I was wearing my winter gear. Sweat some.  Stopped at Stan’s parent’s gravesite south of Effingham, and he put a rose on it. He said he was going to continue home, but Andy was flat too tired to go any farther. We ran up to Effingham and got a cheaper motel after Andy about had the big one when we inquired how much at a Holiday Inn express..  Nice dinner at Fridays.
Andy..

Be kind to me fellas, I'm a lowly small block rider who has only a foggy idea of what a "spine frame" is.

So what is the plan for Saturday morning?   Big breakfast at the hotel or a local restaurant?

I am leaving Dallas late in the day, so will arrive in Harrison late Friday night, perhaps very late.   I am staying at the Hotel Seville.

Certainly interested in a local ride on Saturday if that comes together.

We'll play it by ear for Saturday, since most folks will be there Friday night,we should be able to figure it out.

Left Tampa at 6:30 this morning. Little over 600 miles today, with 450 miles of rain.  Holed up in a motel in Collins, Mississippi. Cheap room, restaurant and a gas station with beer right next door. Hope to be in Harrison by 6 tomorrow.

Well, it was Wednesday.... she said they had only one room left.
I went and tried it online.   Same price.

We've stayed at that Hotel a few times and the price has always been around $80.  Business must be good.

Got home around  2.  I missed a road sign in Muskogee and ended up going south rather than west.  Probably lost an hour but it was a good ride.

Put my rain gear on but only needed it to stay warm.

Looks like everyone had a good and safe time and ran their own rides.   One ticket and I got a warning.

Sorry I missed you Dusty, the weather and getting lost just turned me around.

I was on Push Mountain This last Saturday 5/12/2018 lots of marble size gravel in the right hand turns, I was heading north, and some road break up in the north bound lane. But I stopped by a small convenience store at Lone Rock and that guy has got a crazy factory built bicycle in the store, sometimes you find the coolest stuff in the most normal places. Nima's pizza in Gassville is worth a bit of a ride especially if you take some back roads and stay off 62 as much as possible.

I encountered some rocks and gravel sprinkled like fairy dust on Push Mtn.  Taken at a brisk clip it was no problem  Very little traffic on Saturday.  Also some sand on 123 northbound side.  Again, no traffic.

Have to say it was great weather and great riding.

Sorry for posting so late. I arrived home around 4:30. Was surprised to not run into any rain until west of Independeance, KS. Had a miix of misty light rain to moderate rain until Augusta, KS. The Norge fairing and the Frogg Toggs did the job well.
Lost about an hour when I tried to go west south of Joplin and got myself into Oklahoma somehow and almost couldn't get out, was like the twilight zone. I don't think I was ever more than 20 south of the KS boarder but couldn't find a north road that didn't turn into dirt (had just rained heavily through that area so that was not an option) or were closed for various reasons. Finally found one.
Great weekend with great weather overall in a wonderful setting. Good people having good times. Some pictures:

Ok, I am now back in Terrell.  Long day back for me.   Breakfast at Ozark cafe (was not crowded!).  Explored the Jasper vicinity.  Then did 123.  Meandered down 7, then headed west for Mena.  Did Talimena Scenic  1 1/2 times, then 259 to Broken Bow and points south.

A solid 580 mile Sunday

Thanks to everyone for making Harrison work out.  Good times.

Finally made it home to Tampa. Sunday was hot and we only managed 550 miles. Got an early start Monday with great weather. Once we made it past Pensacola it started to rain. That was probably a good thing. It kept the temps in the mid 70's. A little over 700 miles today. Bike is in the garage and I get to sleep in my own bed tonight. Good trip. Really enjoyed meeting other Guzzi enthusiasts.

Dorcia was a little hesitant to ride with the hooligans,  so we went north and west. Stopped at this campy picker's delight..

and got the grand tour. There were a *lot* of antiques, automotive memorabilia, etc. on display. Interesting fellow.  He said the gays had ruined Eureka Springs,  so naturally we headed there for lunch, still following the dotted lines on the map. Smooth winding hilly..what's not to like?
A few pix from the next day. Sorry, I didn't take many on this trip.
We met up with some of the law breaking  hooligans here..
when they were having an extended breakfast. We, of course, had been riding sedately and being passed by blue hairs in Buicks.
The Kid had never been in the Ozarks before and was amazed at the smooth roads without frost heaves.
Need I say it was a really good time?
Thanks for the memories, and putting it on, John.. :thumb:

The pleasure was all mine.  We'll do it against next year.   :thumb:

I used to live in St Louis, Illinois side.  Great town.  No worries.

Those old ladies can run over you.  Better than getting a 15+ warning from Mr Trooper like yours truly.

I have no idea where the antique (aka junk) store was.  There are still places there where I haven't seen.

Sorry you didn't embarrass  me in a race with the Mighty Scura.
But I think you're just building it up.  You want a bigger purse.  sunday  SUNDAY!!    SUNDAY  !!!!

Chuck is the gentleman of the board.  His son Brad is a first class guy.  Thanks for your gratitude Chuck, helping me with a broke bike, inviting me to your family dinner and putting up with me.  (I ain't easy to take)

And Rocker, no one from Ar-Kansas ever made it.  Next year Dude.

It was at Berryville, on a ride from the brochure from the hotel. The (winding, technical, deserted) roads were poorly marked, and finding the Memory Lane museum was like a scavenger hunt.  The roads went up near Table Rock lake to Blue Eye, pop..uh.. not very many.  Definitely off the beaten path. There were many more buildings than the one I took a picture of. Interesting, if you like that kind of stuff. Dorcia loves auto memorabilia.
