Title: Unloved and left to rot
Post by: MedicAndy on July 28, 2021, 04:19:20 PM
I saw this picture of a 1996 1100 Sport posted last week on a different forum. I guess the saying "too each their own" comes to mind..... This bike had been sitting in the same spot now since 2005. I would assume that this bike is past the point of a restoration project by now. However, although the Termignoni exhaust slip-ons are probably dry-rotten by now, I would love to get my hands on those Termignoni header pipes and crossover, they would go great with my spare Termignoni slip-ons. 🙂

On the brighter side of life, I gave a spare set of Heli-Bars to a gentleman who bought one of my bikes last year. He contacted me last week and told me that he was not going to install them on the bike (he can't ride the Sport anymore, so he is going to sell it), so he sent them back to me..... How nice was that.... I was more than willing to buy them back from him, but he wouldn't take my money, not for the Heli-Bars or for the shipping cost.....

BASTARDS...!
Why won’t the ****s just put the poor thing under some sort of cover.
Imagine what Canuck, Fencepost or Dave Swanson could do with it....

I had a work friend years ago who let his 75 Goldwing (not yet a "collectible" as of the date all this happened) sit uncovered in his back yard for several years because it developed an electrical problem that he couldn't easily solve and he was, by his own admission, too cheap to pay someone else $100 to have it fixed.  Eventually, the motor seized and he ended up giving it away, thus trashing a bike that was worth at least $1K - 2K at the time in running condition, all to "save" $100.  Otherwise relatively smart, but he had a blind spot a mile wide on some issues.

How could anyone neglect such a beautiful bike?

I wouldn’t care if it was cost effective or not, it would be lovely to bring it back.
I’d like it more than one I just went out and bought, much more self involvement.

It may be hard for some to believe...
But maybe something more tragic happened in someone's life than worrying about a pile of nuts, bolts, and metal.

A good friend of mine who gave up riding when his first child was born (35 years ago) has several widow makers rotting in his yard. He likes to be able to say he has them but they are not even good lawn ornaments anymore.

Many people get emotionally attached, or are just major procrastinators, or simply dreamers, and don’t know when to part with things.

Out in the countryside I see many houses and trailers returning to nature.

They always ran when parked and that was only two years ago.  I agree that some things are more important than motorcycles, but it is a very short list and I don’t think about those things other every free minute.

Maybe he did it just to see if he could make some guy halfway around the world twist & squirm and has a running bet with his buddies about how long it would take to become an Internet icon...?  Wonder who's buying the beer?  Or he could offer it up for an over-the-top $$$ price (maybe like that 48 Vincent..) and still make to people squirm.

His bike.  His rules. To me, it's art that took that many years and deliberate action/inaction to create.  Who else in the entire world has one in that same condition?  Probably no one, because he's the only person on earth who is able to get over it and not be ruled by his possession.  It's probably the end of the ruler.   Very cool.

Too many probablies and maybes in most of the responses.
Stop making excuses for neglect and the title of the thread is “unloved and left to rot”. There’s nothing wrong about that.
Whatever the circumstances, some bastard should have taken some action to get it in a shed.
Disgraceful...

Man, I wish I had pics of the Eldo police bike and Tonti-framed California that lay in the mud and horsesh-- of an open horse pasture for at least 25 yrs about 5 miles from here.  They were 30ft-40 ft from a huge almost empty dilapidated barn where the owner had his absolutely filthy but high mileage 850T parked next to a Suzuki GT750.  Never would sell or even price any of them.   All was razed & scrapped about 4-5 yrs ago, just before my last somewhat regular visit trying to get them over said 25 yrs..

By comparison, That Sport is a well-cared-for creampuff, stored upright on dry pavement in the corner near walls with at least some protection from the elements.

It's just a machine , it has no feelings , doesn't feel pain , calling someone a bastard when you know nothing about the situation seems silly . Is every farmer who left an old tractor outside a bastard ?

Thought I was the only one that thought like that. TY 👍

I've noticed that over my decades I see people who worship at the alter of false economy as though it were a god.

In Australia it’s a generic term and not necessarily an uncomplimentary one, you could insert “bugger” or “guy” or “caring individual” to convey the same sentiment.
The bike does not have feelings as you correctly say, but one thing is certain, it has been unloved, intentionally or otherwise and most decidedly left to rot..
I find it irksome, that you’ll see members here get misty eyed over the resurrection of a crusty old 850 T or similar, but can show casual indifference to a widely accepted work of art, that has been thrown away like yesterday’s leftovers.
Oh by the way...
I never said that it had been left due to neglect by the owner, he might have been bowled over by the 8:15 bus to Clapham Junction for all I know or locked up for life with Rolf Harris, but someone must have noticed at the 2 month mark, that something was amiss.

What does that message even try to convey ?
All bikes are false economy, join a syndicate and share a Hyundai Getz if you want to approach economical motoring. Motorcycling involvement is an affair of the heart and as such should not be asked to mesh with the cold reality of cash.
Bikes don’t make dollars, but they do make sense...

There’s a 70 or 71 Mach one Mustang here in town that is slowly turning to rust. It belonged to the son of the guy who’s yard it’s parked in. His son was a soldier who was KIA. The guy won’t sell it, nor will he use it. I don’t agree with letting it rot, but I understand having an emotional attachment that prohibits him from letting it go.

There was a CBX half buried in a gravel pile just a few blocks from me. It was there for years. Every time I went by I thought what a shame. Then one day it was gone. I rode one once, I was not impressed.

My LeMans was taken apart years ago and it was sitting (rusting) in someone's garage in south Florida for many years. This is the cleaned up version from when I got the project:

There is something intrinsically wonderful about a bike that has been brought back from the brink. The very fact that it owes the builder more than a comparable good condition example, only serves to heighten the bond and attract kudos to the builder.
Some things are worth more than the sum of their parts.
If you see a fully insured BMW R1000 RR trashed 20 minutes after purchase by an unskilled owner, your heart does not break, he will have another one in a week.
But when you go in the back shed and see the CB 350 Honda that your Dad rode to work in all weather, working two jobs to put food on the table for the family, you are less dismissive.
That fence post Guzzi project was an absolute inspiration.
