Title: Norge Topbox
Post by: BRIO on August 13, 2015, 07:22:50 PM
I want to get a topbox for my Norge. I read about the first generation box falling off. Has anyone heard of the revised box popping off or did the update resolve the issue?

My first gen unit popped off and exploded along I-40 at about 80 mph, about3-4 years ago. The 2nd gen replacement hasn't so far, and is equipped with a small but apparently effective safety latch that can only be operated with the trunk opened. I am satisfied with the fix.

I have the later Non-Self-Ejecting top box on my Norge. They fixed it, worry not.
Just don't lock your keys in it.......

GIVI makes a dedicated rack that replaces the Norge/Stelvio "black tongue" that sticks out the back. Will hold any of their Monokey cases very well.  I have one on a Norge and on a Stelvio.

BTW, the mud flaps were hung on for a joke in that pic.  NOT part of my riding set-up!!

I have the second generation and I have proofed it to 140 MPH indicated and Oklahoma roads without any drama.

Running a couple of long bolts through the bottom of the bag through the support frame below provides peace of mind.

That is my one and only complaint about this lovely motorcycle.  Why the hell couldn't they make a top box with the same tumblers so that you don't need a second key.

^ I agree about the key!

My newish top box hasn't fallen off yet, and my wife reports that it is a very sturdy back rest. Plus, I usually haul a lot of stuff in it with no problems. Tonight, I transported my Skil saw at high-speed for over 100 miles with no problems.

The first gen top box did use the same key as the bike and side boxes. When they designed the more secure latch for the 2nd generation non-self-liberating unit, the tumbler changed to a more common type to accommodate the safety mechanism.

I bought a top box from a forum member a few years ago.  How can you tell if you have a 1st or 2nd generation top box?

Gen 2 top box uses a small key and has a flip out handle around the key tumbler. The case is rounder and less sculpted. Most of all, if you open the box and look down at the latch, to the left of it you'll see the safety latch, a post that you turn 90 degrees to prevent the rack mount from accidentally being loosened.

I fixed mine so that my keys can't get locked in anymore. I was disappointed that the later box did not use the matching lock cylinder that came with my bike. I investigated modifying it to work but it was not doable.

Mine came with a spare tumbler, supposedly to allow rekeying to have them all alike. The spare should have come with the topcase.

Did you have the old or new model topbox.  I was told that the tumblers were incompatible with the Guzzi keys.  In other words, there is no way to rekey the box to accept the Norge key.

It is absolutely true that the NEW (and currently available) topbox CANNOT be keyed to match the bike's ignition key. The cylinder CANNOT be changed, as the housing and mechanism are not designed to work with the cylinder needed for the high security key.

If anyone's case came with a single spare tumbler, they should check to see whether their case is in fact a first-generation unit and is not equipped with the internal safety lock. If so, it is highly recommended that they use one of the supplementary fixing techniques to avoid losing the box at speed.

My 2014 Norge came with an extra lock cylinder that was in a plastic bag (along with extra bolts and rubber pieces from the rear bag installation).  I didn't know why the extra lock cylinder, so my guess it was for the rear trunk   And yes the key fits and works with it.
