have seen this one for sale for about a month....anyone think it has some collectability?

I don't know what they are worth, I just knew that I really wanted one when new. That fairing was so good looking. I think it stands the test of time well.

There good bikes. Never same cudo as the roginal Z's but they are better bikes with a bit more power and all the strenghts of the orignals, solid, good fuel consumption., sporty riding, practicallity.
The GPZ750 wasnt much quicker than the 550 but better spread of power. I love em, really like the 80's styling and bright italian red (I have a LM1000, some say its a copy styling wise of the GPZ's). Clocks are great, great cockpit view.
Things to look out for:
word bushes in the rear suspension.
Perished rubber intakes, crack rubbers
word brake pins and sloppy brakes
soggy suspension
Recent shim check
KEv

The "top gun" Ninja has collectability. But I think this one would just be a normal Japanese inline four of that era ... like the Suzuki GS bike.
Not sure where this one is located and how priced, but with crazy high prices on used bikes now ... it will probably go down in value since you are buying at near a peak of prices. I'm assuming Alaska is the same as the lower 48 states? If things were "normal", it would probably go up ~$1000 in say 5 years. (wild guessing and speculation there)

One step away from fame. Not the “Top Gun” must have.
Which can make it a great ride to have vs a great deal to invest in..cheaper than the real deal but great to ride based on your pocketbook. Not an investment.

Never owned one, but if given the chance I would jump all over a 750 or 1100 unitrak GPZ. The engines are supposed to be bulletproof. I don't recall the year, but some had wonky injection?

Nice to see some speculation on this, I was too much into hondas (cb750s) of this era to get acquainted with these. the bike is in talkeetna AK and has been on list over a month. if were a KZ900-1000....in a heartbeat! but this one seems to be the red headed stepchild FWIW! acording to the ad, it had some mod work done, great track bike....if I only had some track! lol!

Make it a first generation 550 and I would jump on it. That 750 would make a great rider but not a great investment. I’ll bet it sounds great.

There are worse ways to spend $3500. :grin:
If you got it for $3000, sounds like a fun bike to ride around and enjoy it. And seems $2500 ish is probably a basement price for a nice running version of this bike. So you would probably not lose more than $500, also probably not go up much more than $500 if you could buy it for $3000.

Back in the day, I had a brand new, red 1981 Kawasaki 550 GpZ.
It was a reliable, fast, and solid bike nicknamed "The Giant Killer" for obvious reasons.

If any of you have ever been to talkeetna, or just down the parks hwy. it is in the middle of a 350mi. stretch of undivided black top through the expanse of sparsely populated interior of alaska...perfect place for a crotch rocket!
but alas, my wallet (and common sense) has vetoed so up for grabs! cheers!

Two years back I picked up a solid 02 750 S with 10.6k original miles on it. Kinda like the last of the GPZ's. I went thru it and got it "this" close to being ready to start to then balance and set the carbs. But I ran out of steam to finish it I bought it to relive my youth so to speak. I loved the Kawasaki 4's in my youth before I discovered Guzzi's. They were my favorite and most reliable Japanese bikes I had owned.
Then I bought a new RE 650 GT and haven't looked much at the old Kawasaki project. I suppose I am getting too old & tired for projects anymore.

On a recent Road Trip to Laughlin, NV, one our riding buddies took his RE 650cc Continental GT along.
For only 48 HP, and with 6-speeds, it sprinted right along, and everyone was impressed!! :thumb: :bow: :cool: :boozing: :smiley: :thumb:

Yeah. My RE 650GT has been great for me. It was just the bike I needed.
But I barely have the energy to keep up with chores around here and have no energy left over for projects. I should pass it along to someone more motivated.

My brother and I did the Keith Code riding school on the 550 at the old Louden track in 86??
What a panic.
Unfortunately in the beginning of the day I was used to riding my old R75 and didn't know to ride it like I stole it and red line it around the track. Once Bro told me how to run it ( and what clutch?? ) I was much faster.

Yes it has.
Find someone who wants it, you buy it for the asking price, sell it to that bloke for 50% more and make sure you splash it all over social media as a money maker.
You give him back the 50% mark up in a brown paper bag.
Now it’s collectable, when some guy hears about it and sees one for sale….?
He’ll buy it and wait for the value to keep rising.
