CNC cutting gaskets
« on: July 02, 2019, 07:05:52 PM »
I had to drop the head cover off my Laverda to inspect the timing chain and in doing so the gasket stuck to the alloy and needs replacing. Now you just don't find these laying around so I swung over to a local gasket manufacturing shop, they scanned my head cover, cleaned up the image and made me three gaskets, all in about 15 minutes!

They made me two composites and one paper stock, The best part on top of this amazing service, since they used up scrap stock they only ask for a donation to a local charity, WOW! I was so impressed I took a video of them making the gaskets. The flat bed cut table has a vacuum bed that sucks the material down while the blade cutter goes to work.

I sold my Parilla 250 Wildcat in 07 to a buyer who owned a large multi-brand recreational vehicle business.  In talking about sourcing obscure parts for bikes like that, he said he had/has one of these gasket-making machines and used it all the time, both for customer service and on his own projects.  Said he could either produce new gaskets from old gasket or mating surface scans or from files in the database.

Very cool stuff.

Your not kidding and they welcome motorcycle work!

They told me to bring in any component / casting surface that will fit on their flat bed scanner and they will make me gaskets out of any material / thickness.

Nice. Sooner or later a gasket on the Aero engine will fail. I was thinking I'd have to do it the hard way.. :thumb:

My wife just got one of these:
https://cricut.com/

It's basically a CNC paper cutter.    It can cut card stock, vinyl (for decals), and iron on transfers for T-shirts.   I gotta think it can handle gasket material.    I'm already thinking about using it to make some Ducati 749 decals for my track bike.

cnc is a real game changer.  i just cut my first piece on a waterjet cnc yesterday. in autocad i designed a go pro mount that sits on the fairing of the sport 1100i. then i transferred it over to the waterjet's software, tweaked it, set the tool path, and unleashed the krakken.  in a matter of a couple of minutes i had a beautiful precision cut piece in stainless steel.

the future is now.

Don't forget, a 50 watt laser engraver will cut card stock, I've drawn gaskets in my cad program and then sent a dxf file to a friend with a laser engraver, not as fast as the scanner but works very well and it will cut foam for airbox seals, lots of options and they get less expensive all the time : )
