Engine Sleeving Service Reccomendation
« on: July 03, 2019, 09:21:17 PM »
My Moto Morini 500 cylinders were fitted with new oversize pistons and rings by the previous owner, unfortunately front cylinder compression was 80 psi, 120 on the rear, far below spec. To make matters worse the cylinders have been over bored beyond max spec and the bore is not true! After seeking advice from several machine shops I found L.A. Sleeve in Los Angeles.

I called L.A. Sleeve last week and was told they can make and fit new sleeves in just about any motor and fit them to my new oversize pistons. I sent the pistons down to California on Purolator and they emailed me today to say safely arrived and no problem making new liners, estimate of $300 per cylinder.

US Chrome is one company that does cylinder work.  I went to a snowmobile show years ago and they had samples of their work on display.  They can repair just about any defect and then plate it. Their prices are not low but, for the hard to find cylinder they are a great choice.  The samples I saw on display were so impressive I keep their card figuring if I ever needed their service I would use them.  Mike

I've used LA Sleeve for over 30 years. I always bought their materials and had my machinist do the boring and fitting. First class outfit from that perspective.
300 a cylinder including material doesn't sound too unreasonable in todays world.  I would think a good local machinist could do that job for you but I know finding a guy to do small one off job is a challenge. Good Luck with the project.

with those prices you might consider fitting used cylinders,
especially if you need pistons too
on german ebay there are a couple of sets available.

I looked at used, no idea on condition of pistons, rings or cylinders and shipping plus currency conversion was much more expensive. There is only one new liner at Mdina Italy and one new cylinder again more money than sleeves.

I have used Millennium before and Motts Machinery in Edmonton sends work to them, unfortunately the over bore was too great and the built up coating required from Millennium was beyond maximum allowable. Millennium could try to coat the thickness required but were concerned the coating would flake at that thickness.

Yes I did check with Mdina Italy, they bought all of the stock from NLM when they sold last year. The 500 parts are few and far between and only one liner and one cylinder were available and they cost much more than new sleeves. Used parts from Germany were also more expensive than new sleeves so I think LA Sleeve was my best option
