Cleaning electrical connections on a 98EV. Pulled the ignition switch and thought I'd ask how it comes apart before I destroy it. New territory for me. Have contact cleaner and some Deoxit. Anything else I should do?

Got cap off. Pretty clean. Do I call it good, spray some deoxit and pack a little petroleum jelly in it?
Or is there something on the other side of the white terminal disc that should be looked at?

If it's much the same as the V7C ignition, there's something on the other side. Mine played up, & when disassembled I found that heat (how'did that get in there?) had deformed the white plastic that supported the contacts so it no longer worked properly. It looked like those white plastic bits SHOULD be available to someone in that niche trade to rebuild, but I thought it too hard to chase down & settled for a replacement switch - & the lock set was not significantly more expensive than a new switch (& it was in stock & the bare switch wasn't).

I've gotta assume (never had one apart) that the part that needs looked at is on the other side. :smiley: Probably be brass. Wire brush it, vaseline it, and put it back together.

You need to remove the white plate, its held in by 3 clips (part of the outer body), one is different from the other two, unclip that one and tilt the plate out.
The grease goes hard, just wipe it out, I don't like to use solvents incase it attacks the plastic parts, just replace the grease with plain old petroleum jelly aka Vaseline.
When you put it back together, i don't think its possible to get it wrong, try to fix the wires to the back cover, its important the wires don't flex at the solder joint or they will quickly snap off next to the solder.

Dielectric grease. Vaseline melts at 37C / 99F; and on a suitable wick, like a cotton ball, (or fabric insulation) makes a handy fire starter.

Deoxit is safe for plastics. It's wonderful stuff.

Thanks all. Yogi, yes it's a winters project, am retired and have all the time I want. Also have some plans this summer and with it being 20 yrs. old a little TLC couldn't hurt.
For those, like me, who have never seen the guts here's a crappy photo.
The under side of the white disc had a thin grey layer of crud on it. The small half plate inside holding the copper contacts falls out easily during disassembly. This half plate can go back in either way so note orientation.

I know I keep harping on this, but these machines are getting old, and the electrical systems are not water/corrosion proof. Take all the connectors apart, De Oxit. Relay bases below..

Where did you here that nonsense, electricians have been using Petroleum Jelly aka Vaseline on sliding contacts for at least 60 years that I know of and probably long before my time. Cotton balls and fabric insulation on the other hand may not be a good idea. Several of the members who know something about dielectric grease on the other hand are dead against it for contacts.

Wayne recommends DeOxit Gold. It's called that because of the price. :smiley: It's formulated for "electronics connections and contacts"
A little goes a long way, though.

And on a moving contact that will arc, like an ignition switch, dielectric grease will turn into abrasive silicon dioxide. One of the worse places to use dielectric grease.
