OK, ive been out of the loop for over a decade!! Just picked up a new to me 02 Cal stone, and seeing that I need a new helmet.. I LOVE my old Shoei RF108V that ive had since the late 80's.... as i grab it off the shelf I see the padding has deteriorated. Well searching for new i see.... $400+!!! OK.. so here is what I want.. Full face, solid color, and nothing too fancy.. vents are nice, but I dont need all the bells... I also prefer a fiberglass shell.. I just think its the best for impacts. Whats out there thats basic, solid, and affordable? Any advice for me?
Remember the old ad that said "If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet!"
That being said, I have owned several "HJC" helmets over the years and have found them to be a high-quality, long-lasting helmet. If I were going into the fray budget-first, I'd get another HJC, probably a CL-17. You can get them for $125 or so, and sometimes find them on clearance for even less ....Lannis
But comfort, particularly, is really important. And sizing is critical to safety. In general, if the helmet feels just right when you try it on, it’s too big. A helmet needs to fit much like a ski boot, so it should be somewhat uncomfortable when brand new; when broken in after some hours of riding, it will fit just right. Caveat, watch out for hot spots, which mean the helmet is probably the wrong shape for your particular head.
Remember the old ad that said "If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet!"Also, helmets and shell materials have advanced greatly since the 1980's, there are many composites that, while maybe still called "plastics", are superior to all the 1980 materials.
I discovered the portuguese brand "Nexx" by change. Many of their helmets are made in a combination of Kevlar, Carbon and Glass fiber, and tests show they are astonishing good in comparison to well-known brands. I for example have some X70 jet helms in different colours. I like them.
