Help 1400 won't Start
« on: April 19, 2019, 08:46:50 AM »
I have a 2014 1400 Tourer took it for a ride the other day everything was fine. Parked it in the garage hooked it up to the battery tender. Went to take it for a ride turned the key and nothing.  No display on the dash or anything.  Battery is fully charged. All the fuses under the seat are good. There is power to the fuses.

Any ideas what to look for next? Thanks

Probably the lower section of the ignition switch. I had the same issue. See 'ignition switch fail' on the GuzziTech site.

Battery is only one year old.
I will try the ignition switch when I get home.
Where did you get the plastic part to fix it?

I got home and tried pushing in on the key in the ignition switch and was able to get power. Removed the switch and took the bottom off but I don't see any broken part. Is it possible to buy just the bottom part?

There wont be any broken parts. Two of the copper contacts will be dark brown. Clean them and apply a thin coat of dielectric grease and you should be sorted.

Alternatively (like I did) buy the entire switch and only use the bottom piece, keeping the repaired original as a spare.

You cannot buy the bottom plastic part on its own.

Great info as I have a 2015 Tourer. Is removing the ignition switch simple and self explanatory and what tools is needed? We can't be to prepared or knowledgeable when riding these creatures.

In general, dielectric grease is a bad thing. The ignition switch is one of the worst.

Doesn’t sound like the case this time, but I have found at least in 50% of the times i couldn’t get the motor to crank it turned out to be less than truly snug battery connections.

Don't use a battery tender on a bike that is regulary used. The modern battery's keep up during winter without tender

Have you done the simple things like clean the battery terminals, sometimes if the terminals are left dry the lead Oxide can completely disconnect the battery even if the bolts are tight.
Never install a battery without some form of grease on the connections, Vaseline is my preferred grease but I've only been using it for 55 years.

I have the same problem. How do I remove the security plug/pin that's in place of a mounting bolt on the left side of the mounting bracket?

Are you talking about the ignition switch or the battery?  I've replaced both and don't remember any significant problems with security fasteners, but I have a security bit set I bought at Harbor Freight for under $10 that pretty much fits all of them.

I don't know what types of battery you use, but that's not my experience at all with lead-acid and Gel - I have all my bikes on a tender nearly all the time, even if I plan to use it and they all are fully charged when I want to start. Two of my batteries are in the 'Lord knows how old it is' category. Personally, I use Optimates.
