Typical 850 series ignition advance curve?
« on: January 07, 2019, 08:25:55 AM »
I have a 98 EV motor in my loopframe which I put in a 1976 T3 distributor (for better lack of words) in it with 36mm carbs. It has always run perfectly and never under 50 mpg.
I was tired of such poor mileage on any of my later EVs or equivalent after many ECU remaps so I put the same 36mm carbs on my 03 Ti. Mileage and overall improved but not like the 98. I have learned that the ECU advance isn't as aggressive as the older distributors. Now I can get my ECU remapped to match the older curve, I just need to know what the original curve should be. I did find a  sketch for a loopframe and I think that would be ok.
I have 4 extra ECUs so I could try a couple different curves.
Can anyone provide data, rpm/degrees of advance that would be typical for the mechanical advance of the 70s Guzzis?
Thanks.

There are two advance graphs in the V7 Sport/750S/850-T workshop manual, pages 40 and 41, figures 161 and 166.

Morning John,  the graph you are looking for is in the V750 Sport/850T manual but it's small. There is another in the G5/SP1000 manual also small somewhat. The one I used w/doing MyECU from AU on my 98EV is the electronic ignition graph in the supplement for SP3 and is large, covers the whole page. It also will be 2-3* initial advance(fixed) which works better for the 1100. I tried the 8* setting and couldn't get the bike to idle correctly w/fueling. The stock mapping goes up to 46* and I had constant pinging, mine stops at 34* and now gets 50mpg. Still a tad lean checking the plugs. I had an O2 sensor to tell me the CO% rate but never got around to using it. Good Luck

Edit: SP3 also uses 36mm PHF's
