I watched In the Heat of the Night instead.  Great flick.
I couldn't help but see the comparisons between the movie and the tv series. The tv guys followed the movie very closely.

Wonderful movie. If you’re into reading I would suggest a few GREAT ones. All autobiographies.The Forgetten Soldier - my favorite. A young man from Salzburg enlists in the Wermacht in 1943 and fights in the Eastern front until the war ends. William Manchester’s  Goodbye Darkness. His story of the marines in the pacific. The last is what most of Ken Burns Civil War series was based on  - Company Aych.  This is a must read.
