What’s in a name ?
« on: February 23, 2023, 03:08:02 PM »
Just sort of occurred to me that the newer Guzzi’s are not referred to by name very often.
We hear..
“I went for a ride on my Norge..”
Or
“I took my Stelvio, in company with a mate on a Ambassador…”
Or
“I cannot conceive of selling my California….” etc.

Not once have I heard anyone (including me), say
“My Tutto Tereno is a lovely mid sized bike…”
Or
“I look forward to taking my new Mandello on an extended road trip…”
It just doesn’t roll of the tongue, couldn’t be a lack of personal bonding could it ?

On the contrary, I think many folks are quite proud to speak of their specific V7 Stornello, Special, Milano, Rough, Anniversario, Bobber, or Roamer, etc.

Yeah that’s what I mean Dirk.
The V85 is referred to as “the V85”, not the “My Tutto Terreno”
The V100 as just that, not “my Mandello”

Yeah GS, that happens a lot, but only a name WE give you OUR bike.
Remember back a few years where all Japanese bikes wer3 known by size and make.
GS1000, Z1000, XS1100, CB 1100R…etc.
It was usually only the Brits and Euro’s that had nice names.
Daytona (Triumph and Guzzi), Bonneville, Jota, Centauro…etc.
How many guys here have said they bought a new Tutto Tereno, or Mandello ?

For a very long time, I only had a Guzzi.  Most people didn’t care or know the difference, so the model didn’t matter.

Then I had more than one.  So now I need to clarify, but only for the Guzzi people because most people still don’t know the difference…

Well that's a new one for me, never knew it had another name besides 850T. When we first got the T, it was the Guzzi. After we got the v65, it was "the 850." Still call it that. So it goes...
Oh yeah, so yah don't think I left it out, the v65 is "the 650." It'd just wouldn't be right to not give it a name too.

Since I only own one Moto Guzzi, it's easy to just call it Goose or Guzzi. For clarification I'll call it a V7 850, or a V7 e5. Isn't it lovely calling something by its emissions standard?

I couldn't get a clear answer even from the dealer, so I'm genuinely curious to know WHY it's called a V7? It doesn't have 7 cylinders in a V configuration to follow the model naming of the Otto V8. Was the first V7 called that because it was ~700cc in a V configuration? If so, why would an 850cc bike still be called a V7 and not some iteration of V85, V850, or an entirely new name? What would you call the current V7 other than a V7, by the trim level of Stone or Special?
Stoner Special might grow on me.

Ya, to "outsiders" its just a Guzzi... most cant even handle that. I really dont know WHAT to call mine...  too many names!!  Its a California..  but also a Stone... and also a metal. You say stone, people think new V7 stone..  no one knows what a Metal is.. And Calafornia??  I dont really know..  SO its my Guzzi/

The V100 as just that, not “my Mandello”

Not all V85's are TT or Tutto Terreno models tho are they? I thought TT was more of a trim level/accessory package vs. the name of the bike?
Similarly, isn't the V100 or V100S the model name and the Mandello is only the green/grey Centanrio livery? I don't know if thats true or not, but those were my assumptions.

I agree with Dirk, I fell like I hear people refer to their Milano, Breva, Convert, Griso, Stone, CalVin, V7 Special, EV etc all the time.....

There have been previous discussions of this. Same reason why Bonneville still uses T100 and T120 name—they can certainly go faster than 100 mph now.

Say it with me, class,

MARKETING 101: HERITAGE SELLS

The current small block V7 lineage has the clear aesthetic notes of the V7 Sport, which itself was a 750cc. I agree it’s pretty goofy to stick with V7 for an 850, but it’s also goofy to call an 850 a V9 as well. And the only one to get it right has a TT that some people like Mayor forget is even attached to it at all times. It’s all a tragic comedy.

Edit: I didn’t catch my autocorrect changed it to Major BBQ. I’m gonna have to remember that one, lol.

Referring to the T as and interceptor I once intercepted a GS on my T-3. However it took a number of miles and he didn't know I was trying to intercept him until I caught him.

I dunno that you're comparing apples-to-apples in all cases.

But even if you are there's a huge difference between how "Jackal" or "V7" rolls off the tongue compared to "Guardia d'Onore"

I'll also point out that the website clearly says Models - then list V7, V9, V85, and V100 currently.

Though when you go into each of those model pages they says MODELS AGAIN - and list "Editions" or sub-models - like the aforemen tioned:

Quote
EXCLUSIVE EDITION

V85 TT GUARDIA D'ONORE
1946 units to celebrate 75 years of association between Moto Guzzi and the Reggimento Corazzieri, the famous guards of honor of the Italian President.
The Moto Guzzi V85 TT Guardia d'Onore features a glossy black livery with white graphics on the front mudguard, fuel tank, side panels and enlarged Touring windshield. It also includes as standard a central kickstand, engine guards and supplementary LED lights.  This unique model is both a fitting tribute to a special and enduring collaboration and the perfect starting point for creating your own legendary partnership.

DISCOVER MORE

Bottom line  - I say it's all Semantics.

Sometimes my Jackal was a my Jackal, sometimes it was my Cali, sometimes it was my Guzzi.... never was it my V11 (which is what was on the sidecover right above Jackal).

Similarly our V7s are just that - my V7, sometimes my smallblock, sometimes Stone or Carbon just to differentiate between the two.

But mostly semantics.

No, what I meant was…
I don’t say
“I’m gonna’ take my Guzzi 1200 for a ride…”
It’s
“I’m going on my Norge…”

Conversely.
It’s
“I decided to take my V85…”
Not
“I thought the Tutto Tereno would be more fun…”

Why does one have it’s factory name used and the other doesn’t ?

Cookie was confused by 'SP1000', '1100Sport', '1200Sport', so they became 'Baba O'Reilly', 'THE Sure Hand of God', and 'Sweet Leaf'. The Norge is commonly known as 'Billy Rotten'.

I dearly love my motorcycles, but compared to my wife, daughters and dog they are still only commercially produced and mostly replaceable objects. They are referred to as “the Guzzi,” “the Norton,” etc. until a second one shows up.  Then it is “the black Guzzi” etc.  I’m also keenly aware that at any time one of the bikes might be sold or end up getting thrown down the road. At that point I would rather not have named it.

All that being said, I envy a little members giving their bikes names and bonding with them for so long. Maybe I’m just emotionally closed off.

Dave Hewitt, tech rep for Maserati/ Moto Guzzi told me that the Italians heard that ‘Mercian’s liked names on bikes and stuff. I like the descriptive names for machines ,like Old Shakey or Sparky as long as it’s slightly derogatory .
