Hi, all.. Andy is putting an engine together for a friend, and just called and asked if I had a degree wheel. "Yeah, I made one when I did the Aero engine conversion." When I asked why, he said there weren't any timing marks on the engine. He told him to take it to Ace Mallot. Of course Ace can do it, but that would be quite a (two) trips for something that simple.
So, anyway, I told him to bring it over and I'd have a look. Is there something that I don't know what I don't know about timing one of these old boogers? :smiley:

No timing marks on flywheel cept maybe for crankpin location(arrow). The marks are on the generator pulley halves on crank. There is 3 bolt holes for mounting them & shims for tension on belt. 4 marks, TDC, static, rpm noted, full advance. This is w/o looking in book. AND marks are on inside half next to arrow on chest cover. I'll be back w/more info.

OK, it is for timing left cyl as seen sitting on bike. Marks are like chisel stamps. Looking at pulley from front, 1st on left is TDC, next is 10* at 1200rpm(static), next is 20* at 2200rpm, next 38* at 3600rpm(full advance).

V700s usually only have one mark - for TDC. I usually swap on an Ambassador back half or just measure and make a static timing mark with a file.

OR are you talking about marks on cam & crank gears in the front for cam timing?

Charlie is correct. V700 should only have the TDC for LH cyl. stamped into the split pulley. 750 was the first to get the full set of marks and is different than the 850. 750's first mark after TDC is 10 deg, 850 is 5 deg.
EDIT: I think on Benders site there is an article on how to measure the distance for the timing marks.

The V700 I'm riding has a pulley w/4 marks cause I like it better, the other 2 have 1 mark for TDC. I may have more pullies in my parts, haven't looked.

Measure the outside circumference of the gen belt pulley wheel in mm
Divide by 360
Take the result of above and, per steve’s comments
From tdc
Multiple by 10= static mark in mm away from tdc
Multiple by 20 = 2200 rpm. Ditto
Multiple by 38= 3800 rpm full advance. Ditto
Measure along the edge (circumference) of the pulley to make these marks
(if you agree with the stats steve is giving for a v700)
