California Vintage Windshield Buffeting Solutions
« on: May 24, 2019, 03:59:50 AM »
I have also troubles with buffeting with the original California Vintage windshield.
After a loft of research it seems that adding "Lowers" (wind deflectors) is the best option to get rid of this.

Danny (Ncdan) once did a great job with this solution:
https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=86847
At the moment I am not willing to drill holes in my windshield holders  :azn: so I was searching for other options and found Memphis Shades Lowers.
Unfortunately nobody at Memphis Shades was able to tell me if there is a mounting kit for 45 mm forks available. :violent1:
Meanwhile I found out that there is a kit - the code number is MEM9889 it looks like this:
https://www.dragspecialties.com/products/?productId=482603&partNumber=MEM9889
Instructions: https://img.jpcycles.com/staticwebfiles/instructions/pdf/750-583.pdf

Has sombody here ever tried this?

I've never tried lower wind deflectors on my 2009 Cal-Vin but I've tried everything else :) Adjusting windshield angle didn't do anything, tried Wunderlich Wind Deflector with zero improvements, Laminar Lip turned out to be waste of money as well. In pursuit for solution I bought bigger windshield with couple 'vents' and this didn't work, slightly better but too far from being perfect:

With the windshield shown above I purchase H&H fairing:

but I've never tried it because I didn't like the look and the estimated cost to paint it black was $500.00 per each side. I sold the bike at the beginning of this year and new owner installed the H&H fairing despite the fact the bike is white. I have to admit it looks very good but more importantly there is no more buffeting.

Based on this I believe that lower wind deflectors are the right solution and only reason I haven't tried them is the fact I didn't know such things exists :(
Buffeting is crazy problem and I hope I don't have to deal with it again. Couple months ago I purchased 2016 Eldorado, it has OEM windshield from California Touring installed and there is zero buffeting even when riding 150 - 160 kph. Now, I'm very happy I solved the buffeting problem and love the solution :)

I still did not decide what to do ... like a woman
- The buffeting is annoying
- I do not like large screens or look through a screen
- I do not like the looks of vents
- I do not like the looks of deflectors/lowers

In the German Guzzi Forum someone even drives withouth the windshield

Has somebody tried to reduce the size of the screen?

Jan, with the things you listed that you don’t like, they are All the things you MUST INCORPORATE to achieve a calm air space on a motorcycle. The Conclusion is a simple deduction, get use to the wind and learn to enjoy the experience.

Hi Danny,
do you think a stock screen will also work with your solution?

Hi Danny,
do you think a stock screen will also work with your solution?
No sir. Air will come over the stock shield and hit the top of your helmet causing buffering. You can get a shield from CLEARVIEW Shields that you can look over and still get calm air. Near the top edge of the shield will have an up turn, thus forcing the air flow higher and possibly over ones head if the shield is still high enough. I’m sorry but I can’t understand why anyone would want wind, rain, rocks and insects to strike them in the face when they could be protected by a windshield. However, not  criticizing ones choice in the matter, “free will” is fair and balanced:)

A member of the German Guzzi Forum has a friend in Norway who created those:

For me this the best looking solution. The guy ist still experimenting with the setup but so far the buffeting problem is already solved.

They look like they will work as does the OEM from Guzzi. My first set was OEM which were much smaller than the clear ones in the picture that I fabricated from polycarbonate material (in the photo) however, the chrome Harley ones pictured here work much better and I think look better on the bike than the clear. Either way for the Calvin those should definitely help wind control.

I worked on the buffeting problem with various degrees of success for years. Rifle makes a taller/wider screen. That helped, but came up short. I tried Vetter Pop-Vents, which made a slight positive difference, but not enough. The best solution so far is a taller than stock Rifle shield that is raked down low enough for me to see a clear view of the road. This has yielded the least buffeting, and if set up carefully is pretty stable at higher speeds. It looks pretty good to my eyes...

When I had my Calvin I found that  regardless of windshield heights, I still got wind, on my face and up my nose effect, until I added the fork lowers. As I posted here a couple years ago, the addition of the Harley wind deflectors ended ALL buffering and unwanted wind to the face.

I am working on this again.
So far i did not add lowers because I want to keep the original look of the CalVin.

My first idea was to shorten the windscreen (I bought an used one for testing).
This did not work at all. Wind noise and buffeting got worse.
I cut off 11 cm at the top so the shield top was approx. on the height of my neck.
Maybe this solution works for tall guys but I doubt that.

Then I added the piece I cut off to my original windshield:

I adjusted the height (+3,5 cm) so that it was still possible for me to look over the shield.
Result: Better than the original windshield.

The easiest solution is to bring the original shield in the most upright position.
I had to cut off a bit of the shield above the headlight and I had to enlarge the upper holes of the holders (12,5 instead of 11,5 mm)

With this procedure I have no buffeting up to 120 Km/h.
You still have wind noise but a bit less than before.
Next step: Homemade Laminar Lip

I had a National Cycle Plexi Faring 3 on my EV.  It was great.  Unfortunately it was dropped by the tech working on it and broke in two.   And to make it worse, National Cycle didn't offer a replacement for my EV.   So I got one the didn't quite fit but was able to bend it and force it on but unfortunately a few months later I dropped that one and broke it myself when I was cleaning it.

So I got a Plexi Fairing 2 which has no lower section and it was awful.  I've compensated by repositioning the fairing until it's acceptable but no where near as good as the original.  I've also considered adding some lower deflectors to determine if it will eliminate buffeting.

I think if I were do it again, I'd purchase a Plexi Fairing 3 and take a hacksaw and hairdryer to it and make it fit better.

But don't let it fall from your bench or drop it.

Hey All,
Fascinating reading and very timely. I just bought an '03 EV touring and I know going in that the fairing is horrible and had pretty much planned on replacing it with an H&H, and, as but ugly as they are, they work. Now I'm seriously wondering if lower deflectors might allow me to work with the stock fairing. Maybe the combination of Vetter vents or a vent cut in the lower portion of the shield like Cal Sci uses to reduce back pressure, and some lowers like Dan showed us (Thanks Dan!) would solve the problem, I know this is a Cal Vin thread but anyone here have experience with the EV touring as well?
Thanks,
Steve M

I really don't see it as a big problem, I'm probably not going to ride the Iron Butt on the thing. That motor in the twisties in 3rd gear is so fun, buffeting never crosses my mind  :thumb:

Steve, I had an 03 EV, great bike. I did a mess of research until I was able to fit a plexifairing 3 on my EV and it worked great, offering maximum air and element control. The fairing that fit mine was for a Honda shadow 750. I can’t remember which size clamps it took to fit the forks but plexifairing worked with me until we got it right.

I tried trimming the one on my 03 a couple of times  added vents, adjusted thr angle, nothing worked.
In frustration I took it off and left it off. Looks a lot better too. Just take it off and throw it away

Look at the 110% propsal. I think the different shape (radius at the top) could cure this problem.
In the US windshield are quite popular on touring bikes. There must be a solution.
I think Danny (NcDan) found it but I do not want to look through a shield.

Did you have to do any cutting or reshaping on the windshield itself or only to get the right positioned mounts?

Attachments are hose clamps that will fit most fork tubes and clamps on the handle bars.

I put a California Sport windscreen on my CalVin (on my 04 EVT as well).  Make sure you leave two finger widths between the top of the headlight and the bottom of the screen to allow air to flow under the screen.  Without this gap the air being sucked into the vacuum left by the windshield pushes the rider's helmet around.

I had zero issues with buffeting with the Sport windscreen on either machine.

YMMV but it worked for me.

No mods needed. Most bikes with round headlights the same windshield will fit regardless of brand, year or make. The shield is attached to the handle bars with brackets and same with the mounts on the forks.

I did acknowledge in my post that the H&H, is "butt ugly", but, SHIT Sandwich??? I've ridden behind one of those fairings and I guess I should appreciate the decline in my sensory perception as I age. I would say that it would be nice if "form following function" could have come out a little, no, a lot, more aesthetically pleasing. We shouldn't hold our breath though (pun intended).

Which Cal Sport did you use?  This is the only photo I could find:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.motorcyclespecs.co.za%2Fmodel%2Fmoto%2520guzzi%2Fmoto_guzzi_california_special%252098.htm&psig=AOvVaw2U82UZqss9wTudxau4L86M&ust=1593043232113000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCKDm8dKSmeoCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

It wasn't a California Sport windshield, it was a California - Sport Windshield.  I bought it 'used' off fleabay and had always thought it was OEM Guzzi.
