Yikes!
Activity is increasing on the sun and everything here is stretched to the limit.
That would have probably caused a major disruption in the electrical grid as well as cutting off the internet, if it had happened two weeks ago or if it happens again in two weeks. The sunspot activity is on its periodic upcycle as predicted.
At least it should produce some interesting HAM radio propagation. Time to fire up the shortwave and may be time to be glad you have points ignition on the old Guzzi.

Interesting. What gets extinguished in such an event?

I meant to say extinction level event but it didn’t happen that way.  I wish I hadn’t gave away most of my primitive living equipment.

It wasn't anything approaching extinction level, unless you think some temporary interference with the Grid is going to kill everyone top side.

Maybe you saw the first one which was minor, the kill shot was the second one.

Found this on a NASA web site about the sun, take it for what you will:
" Remember, there’s every reason to believe that storms on the sun have been happening for billions of years, since the sun and Earth came to be. If that’s so, then all life on Earth evolved under their influence."

So I think the wording "extinction event" is a little over the top.  If such were the case, life on earth would have been incinerated a long time ago.

Its the yellow press with prepper ads that are calling it an extinction event.

John, go back and watch and listen to the video you put up!
Yes, the second was a large ejection, but at no point does the narrator suggest anything like what you are claiming.

He said it would have caused some electrical issues. That’s a hell of a long way from everyone’s gonna die!

Worst case event: Grid goes down and regional anarchy occurs. Russians perceive it as a Nuclear attack and launch ICBMs. That would be an extinction event.

Much of the alarm about the electrical grid is beyond hyperbole and well into sci-fi.  New standards and practices make the grid much more robust.

(Much more than most want to know:  Here in the US, the geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) risk caused FERC to order NERC to analyze risk and there was much data collection.  The result has been improved protection schemes and re-assesment of transformer ratings. Journalism about this gets buried by other 'media' in web searches and it's  beyond what people want to understand.)

I stand corrected, it was just shy of kill shot intensity. The thing is that the solar cycle is ramping up while the earth’s magnetosphere is weakening. Over the history of the cycles when these happen at the same time, we are at risk of returning to the Stone Age. If the Carrington event had happened today instead of 1859, the results might have been different than burned telegraph wires and melted telegraph keys.  If I don’t know about it or don’t think it will happen it won’t make any difference. It's coming, no stopping it. Keep thinking green when there's no sun or nothing works. Carbon tax ain't nothing, wait till you get the sun tax.
