BMW Stud in Belleville Wisconsin
« on: January 30, 2015, 09:49:56 PM »
Went to the Duluth Trading Post Outlet store today to pickup 3 pairs of Firehouse pants for the retail price of one (Guzzi Content)  As my son and I were exiting, a BMW rider was dismounting GS 650 PD.  He had the full hi-viz yellow Motorrad one piece suit on and a Schuberth helmet.  Figured he would be like many BMW riders and too good to talk to a mere plebeian like I.  His tires had studs in them.  I asked him about it and he was a fairly pleasant guy.  Told me the studs were screw in and out so you could take them out when you wanted.  He told me the rear tire only had studs in the outer tread so that on dry pavement he wasn't riding on them.  I thought that he had a really good rig  for riding winter roads and back roads up here.  Anyone here ever stud up their bike for regular winter riding, not ice racing?

I used to use screw in ice studs on a DR650 with sidecar and also on a TW200.
They come in different lengths so get the length that doesn't reach into your inner tube.
They work great but done the way you describe I would not care to do on a two wheel machine.
in a turn on bare pavement they can let the wheel slide out from under you.
When I studded my tires, that bike was a dedicated snow and ice machine until I took the studs out.
I would ride a different bike on days when the pavement was bare.
BTW, check the state laws in your area concerning studded tires.  In some states they are illegal.

That BMW driver was driving illegal as studs are not allowed in Wisconsin.

Not sure what BMW riders you have encountered but most of the guys I ride with have BMWs and we talk to anybody and everybody, even the Harley guys.  An no we don't ride to Starbucks or any other coffee shops.

It's well known that Mr. Eastwood rides either an Eldorado or a triumph scrambler disguised as an Eldorado -- sometimes indoors.  I think there's even a pic of it somewhere.   :bike
