What oil filter wrench for a 1200 Sport / Norge?
« on: July 02, 2016, 07:47:04 PM »
Picked up an UFI Guzzi oil filter at the dealer then stopped at an Advanced auto parts store for a filter wrench. With filter in hand, I tried all the ones on display and none fit. So I bought an expanding cam-like wrench for $12. It might work?! It works with a 3/8" wrench and looks like it might loosen the filter but because of the way the cam rotates, it won't tighten the filter. I know some say just hand tighten the filter but I like to snug it up. I can't get my hand up in the recessed area to grab hold of the filter. What do you use?

I use a metal cap-style filter wrench - but then again, I also use Mobil1 M1-102 filters rather than the UFIs...

It depends on what filter you are using. A few years ago, UFI changed from the 8 flat to the 14 flat, IIRC. You may or may not have a NOS old filter. They are out there. I use the Bosch 3330 any more after having too many issues with UFIs. It's an ok filter, available anywhere.

You need to bite the bullet and buy the special wrench if you want to use UFI filters.

I ended up buying a cheap pair of Chinese channel-locks at Harbor Freight and grinding the OUTSIDE of the jaws down til they fit in the recessed area. They work great and still work as Channel-locks for other uses.

Takes a special wrench, not available in your local auto parts store.

OK, so the wrench is not available in auto stores (same for the 10-60 Oil), has anyone used an equlivalant Purolator or Fram oil filter?

The recessed nature of the filter mounting is the real problem. Protects the filter nicely but prevents you from using any kind of strap wrench for removal and tightening by hand for installation which are the techniques I use for all other vehicles. I tried everything and then bought the wrench from MG Cycle.

Make sure the rubber sealing gasket comes off with the filter when you change it out. Mine gets stuck periodically.

I like WIX filters and you should be able to cross reference the UFI or the Bosch on the WIX site. WIX makes filters for Fram but are higher quality. Just make sure specs are the same (bypass pressure etc.)

Did you try turning that cam-type wrench around?
I use one for both installing and removing.  Just flip it over and it cams in the opposite direction.

I originally got one that didn't exactly work...  It was the proper 76mm, 14 flute but it was plastic and wanted to distort and slip on the filter flutes (actually purchased through a Guzzi source).  I ordered a metal wrench (haven't used it yet) but it seems much more secure.  This is the one I bought and seems a better design for the application:

8 flute, 76mm-AF. I can get them at 'Wottalottacrap Auto'. If your local Pep Boys/Auto Zone place doesn't have one they should be able to order one in. They fit filters for a host of vehicles.

+1 on the Bosch 3330.
Commonly available wrench fits perfectly.  Haven't lost a drop after cursing the 1st couple of UFI filters.

OK, so the wrench is not available in auto stores (same for the 10-60 Oil), has anyone used an equlivalant Purolator or Fram oil filter?

Matching filters include:

Purolator PL14476 / PL14477 (PureOne version, preferred over standard Purolator if available)
Mobil1 M1-102 (I use these)
Bosch 3330 (many Guzzi owners like these, often available at WalMart and other mass market sources)
Walmart Supertech ST4967 / 4386 (these test surprisingly well)

Where two filter models are listed, in general the one with the larger gasket ring is preferred (although both fit, the smaller ring may not seal as effectively).

Fram is not recommended by most sources; I cut one apart and decided never to use them again.

Thanks for the info.  I found the Mobil 1 M1-104 oil filter and a corresponding filter wrench at Pep Boys and it went on smooth. It was taking off the old one that was a hassle.

I hope that was a typo - you need the 102, not the 104. The 104 has a stiffer bypass valve rating than the 102, which has the same rating as the stock filter for the CARC bikes.

I have a machined, aluminum filter wrench (sold by Harper's). Trust me on this- just buy the wrench. It is a beautifully made piece of equipment and works perfectly. It;s made my a small machine shop in NH and is worth every penny. It seems hard to justify before you use it...but not at all once you slip it on.

I have an adjustable one I got at an autoparts store...  Works on all my bikes (including my B1100) to remove the filter...  You can even get one at Harbor Freight with a coupon.

14 flutes
I got the wrench and the 1st filters at AutoZone to make sure they were simpatico.  Now I just order a filter occasionally from Amazon when I know I've got an oil change on the horizon.  I've never had to crank on it to get a good seal.  Hasn't lost a drop with the Bosch. Although the wrench adapter is stamped steel, I've not had any issues with the filter binding or not wanting to release.  Works like a cheap little champ!

I use the Bosch 3330 and this wrench "Amico+74mm+Inside+Dia+13mm+Square+Drive+14+Flute+Oil+Filter+Cap+Wrench"

I got the wrench on Amazon back in 2014. That particular link is dead now but you can search, they are still on the site

I have mostly stuck with the bosch because my Subaru uses a 3333 and the Breva 3330 so it's easy to remember- plus it's the same wrench for both
