I've always found that people who are wed to the concept of group identity, tend to be pretty unhappy, insular people.
People tend to associate with other people who share common interests, but every person I have ever met has been a unique individual.
I think the desire to fill in any missing information with our imagination is a big part of human nature.
The internet seems to be an accelerant of this trait.

Well said Nick. I believe that real motorcyclists are born that way. I like them all until someone on a certain brand looks at my lovingly restored (Norton/Guzzi/Ducati/Matchless/Yamaha/Vincent/Whatever) with calculated disinterested derision just because I didn’t sign on the dotted line and buy the bike/apparel/wallet/truck/sunglasses. Then I get a little peeved. Just sayin...

The late WWI ace Albert Ball likened the Morgan 3-wheeler to, ".....the nearest thing to flying without leaving the ground.”
I think that applies to motorcycling in general.

We're part of the environment on a bike - not just a spectator - and we have a more immediate and
visceral connection to it as a result. I like that. A lot.
I suppose I'm a bit biased, but I ride a pretty long season here in Maine; March through December, and
the "dress up and play biker" crowd - the ones who ride only on nice summer days - who won't even talk to one
at a gas station or restaurant are to my mind just rude people. But perhaps they're riding for different reasons than
I do.

I do also.. but as long as its a two way street, and sadly a lot of people dont take as well as they give. Local I live in a sea of HD riders. Really about 90% of bikes are Harleys, and a large chunk look down on every other brand out there. It IS kinda fun to show up on my Stone metal though.. they REALLY want to hate it... but are yet intrigued. Not sure what it is..

I discovered that a certain group that ride in a close formation (usually about 5mph below the posted limit), really don’t like it when a rider on a different brand, gets in the front of their “ pirate parade”. I had that happen last summer, and they slowed even more, to maintain a large gap. :grin:

When I had a Sportster the local Harley contingent wouldn't even acknowledge it. When I got a Twin Cam I was gladly accepted. When I upgraded to my Audace I was generally ignored and one even called me a traitor. I rode with them a couple of times, the icing on the cake was when a bystander asked me about my bike and ignored theirs.

Without knowing the specifics of the situation, it sounds like very reasonable group riding behavior to me. It's not necessarily that they don't want to be seen with you, it's that you're a stranger and they don't know you to trust you with riding closely to them. Some group rides intentionally box out other riders for this reason, it's safer and more comfortable for the group.
