1993 SPIII Valve rocker arm washer shim spring assembly order
« on: February 23, 2017, 07:18:54 PM »
Hi Folks
I am a rookie poster so please be patient. I will try to be concise.
I am trying to determine the correct assembly order of the rocker parts for my 93 SPIII carby.
Took the valve covers off to reset the valves while we have it out for some bottom end work.
The order the parts came out were (left cylinder, intake on right, from the top),
Brass shim, spring, brass shim, rocker arm, washer.
The shim at the top is almost completely warn thru from the spring end. Same on intake and exhaust.
I am looking at the SPIII spare parts catalog and the Strada 1000 work shop addition.
The parts catalog show the need for 4 washers (steel?), 8 shims(brass?) and the 4 springs.
The SPIII picture shows what I thinks is....washer, spring, shim (from the top, according to the part explosion numbers). No other shim.
The Strada picture shows washer?/shim? (not sure which), washer?/shim?, spring, rocker. No other washer/shim.
Searched Wildgoose and This Old Tractor and could not find any references.
Saw a picture that had....washer, spring, shim, rocker, shim.
Please help me!!
Thanks in advance.

washer, spring, shim, rocker, shim.  From the top going down. Intake & exhaust, left & right cyl . Only model I've different is the V700 and maybe an Ambo 750 and all 8V and SmallBlocks.

OR in diagram #2, #35, #36, rocker, #36 ,  top down.

Steve,
Thanks.
That was our thought after seeing the damage to the shim from the spring.
Yup, Ambo, Eldo & 72 V7 different. Checked those manuals also.
Guess I'll be adding to my order at MG to replace the beat shims.
Thanks again!

Just FYI:

Ambo and Eldo is brass shim, spring, rocker. This is looking at the cyl. head while mounted from top (tank) to bottom (spark plug) to be clear. Never understood why the rocker was not brass shimmed away from the rocker mount??

I have to say......I love it.
I am 6'2" with 34" inseam.
PO had shaved the seat back and made the passenger seat even worse but I fit fine.
I put on bar risers that also moved them back so the ride position with the shaved seat seems to be the same as original. The only difference seams to be quicker? steering at slow speed.
Knees do rest on the inside of the faring but not uncomfortably. I am going to add rubber pads there.
Being a geezer...... early in the day of a road trip, I can do 300mi( a full tank of gas). As the day goes on I need to do less between breaks.

FWIW, Ace Mallot sez he puts a radial bearing in there. Stops all that back and forth stuff, and adds at least 100 horsepower.  The Kid did that on his Spot. No, I don't have the bearing number, but it's cheap. (Guzzi content)
