Nice chunk of charcoal!
How does it ride on asphalt? (since youre a sports bike guy...)

I was pleasantly surprised by it's on road performance. It took a few miles to get used to the height and depending on my seating position I'm on my tiptoes at a stop. If I'm far enough front on the seat I can get my feet flat though. I'm still getting used to being off road though, I'm still not used to that floating feeling off road or in the gravel. That confidence will come with time I'm sure.

Looks good man!

and as your bike's name suggest...a Horn on the front might not be the most aerodynamic thing, but might just be as well appropriate

Pete,

Yes. It was a late '12. I still had the dealer pull the cover and verify prior to purchase.

Omg, I hope the bugs weren't too bad while you were getting the Rhino back on it's feet,,, the question that comes to my mind,,, do you think you could have righted it by yourself?

I'm glad that you and the bike look relatively unscathed,,, that long grass looked like the perfect place for a relatively soft landing spot.

Many thanks for everyone's concern. A lot of forresty roads in PA are lined with the rocks that were removed to make the trail/road, this one was no different but I managed to land in the one spot devoid of rocks, on a thick bed of ferns no less.

The Stelvio is fine, I broke it's fall. It actually landed upside down on top of me pinning my right leg under a pannier. It was still semi inverted and subsequently leaking fuel from the gas cap so I tried to lift it enough to get my leg free, that wasn't happening so I tried to leg press it with my left leg, at least enough to free my right leg, that wasn't happening either so I started to try and slip out of my boot and pants. Around the same time one of the other guys came back down the trail and between the two of us we were able to lift it enough to get my leg free.

It took four of us to get it back on the trail and that was after removing both of the panniers, etc.

That makes me see why ADV riders go in for the big tall MX style boots!

I was wearing Forma Terra Evo boots. It's an ADV/Enduro boot but not full on MX.

Glad you're OK.   I dropped my own '09 Black Hippo on my own leg in Nova Scotia and got a high ankle sprain that bedeviled me for months.   That was on a gravel road that was transitioning to pavement, with pea gravel over asphalt.

I didn't mean to be there.   I was following a guy using a GPS that was taking us all over the place.

If I'm going out to play in the woods, I'm taking a 290 pound 250 of some kind;  there's no way I'm taking that tall, heavy 600 pound, 105-hp monster onto a rutted trail and go 25 MPH.   It's the best road cruiser ever, but I mean, where do you need that much power and weight back in the woods, riding over rocks and muddy ruts?

Lannis

Yeah, something along the lines of a KTM 690 Enduro R would have been better suited to where I was, MABDR alternate expert section, when this happened.

The majority of the MABDR is forestry roads with a few alternate "expert" sections that are only a couple of miles each. The expert sections are doable on a big ADV bike but if it was that kind of terrain all day the Stelvio wouldn't be my first choice.

There were four of us on the trip, three Stelvio's and ironically a KTM 500. It didn't help matters that my Stelvio was also fully loaded for me to live/camp off it for nearly a week so it was heavy.

If I'm going on a trail like that I'm taking my XR650L. Anything else is just too big. But I guess that's why they call it an 'Adventure'

Thanks T-Butt.

I had off for 10 days to do the MABDR and it happened on the second section so I have plenty of time for rest and recovery.

I realize this is an old thread, but wondered if you could make any comments about what you had to do to install the barkbusters with heated grips? I see they say they will not fit but obviously you were able to!
Thank you
