Loopframe top speeds?
« on: November 26, 2021, 08:12:25 AM »
In the 'V700 for touring' thread there is a bit of discussion about highway cruising speeds. That got me wondering, whats the top speed you've seen on a loop?

I swear my Ambo runs great. It's more-or-less stock 750 with dellortos (new cylinders of course), but it has a B10 cam, MAC exhaust (no crossover), and foam filters instead of airbox.

my top speed is maybe 75 indicated.  I know a loop is not doing the ton, but I am surprised it cant do 80-90 (not that the brakes are up to the challenge).

My bike seems to run super (only loop I've ever ridden). It sounds good, throttle response seems spot-on all across the range. Plugs look perfect, sounds just like it should. I'm certain the brakes arent dragging...

Does that sound correct to you, or does that sound like a red flag?

My (bone-stock) V700 will do 80 indicated and is still pulling, never ran it or any of my other Loops flat-out to see "what they will do."

For comparison sake, the much-modified and -lightened World Record 750cc(+/-) Ambassadors used 38mm remote bowl Dellortos SS1 carbs.     No matter, I don't place much if any faith in old speedometers.

The 50 year old Veglia on my V700 is 4 mph off at 70 mph, so it doesn't exactly live up to the "vague liar" comments I see so often. The Convert and V50 III are about the same. All checked with GPS.

Years ago, I had my Eldo to 105 or 110 mph two up. Speedo is accurate per my GPS, 70 gps is like 72 speedp. Got to 80 mph pretty quick, took quite a while from there. Long straight desert road.

My Ambo has maybe hit 90 mph or so.

Both will cruise at 70-75mph freeway. They do prefer 65-70mph.

I know I hit 85 on my Ambo before. I was on an old airport tarmac. Didn't have to worry about not being able to stop quickly

Back in the early 80's I saw 120 indicated on my 850 Police bike, it was still pulling.

Yor engine likely needs tuning ,main jets and timing. If the cam is too advanced the engine will be good at lower rpm but  be a dog at higher engine speeds..

I dont know how to adjust the timing but I will look into it. I have electronic ignition FWIW. I think the carb jetting is pretty good

I read the overview on this old tractor but that looks like a 'set it and forget it' process with the marks...  If I open it up and it's already set as per those instructions, I wont know what to do from there.

The Eldorado Automatic. The bike the factory built but never sold to the public, so I had to build it myself. This bike was timed at El Mirage Dry Lake by the SCTA at ~116 MPH. Hence I claim the title, "Worlds Fastest Guzzi Automatic".

My '72 Eldo would do an indicated 80 MPH in third gear. This was an indication that I needed a new speedo.

A good run Mtiberio ! Had this Cali 2 as you see it in the photo. Ran decent  on the street, a high mileage stock engine. Made several runs at 117 mph at the mile standing start track in Ohio

timed by the ECTA ..

Well... If we are talking 5 speeds, ~142 class record at El Mirage.

I saw 100 mph on my 1970 Ambassador, and I have no idea about the accuracy of the speedo.  My 1973 Eldorado saw 105 once, pursued (but not too closely) by my buddy on a BMW R75.   The Eldo was pulling hard at that speed and I am sure it had some more.  The Ambo had was bone stock.  The Eldo had Mac mufflers, pod filters, rejetted carbs to suit the mods, but otherwise stock.  Both bikes were well-tuned with (relatively) new plugs and plug wires, timed with a timing light.   I surprised some folks with both those bikes, especially the Eldo, as it looked like a refugee from a junk yard.

I have seen an indicated 100 mph on my Eldorado, its not the sort of thing I do very often because drum brakes don't have a lot of stopping power.
It's an 850 after all, thats a pretty big engine.

The can go faster it just depends on the starting point, i.e. if you start in a C-130 you should go pretty rapidly.

Circa 1981 my '72 Eldo yielded an indicated 110 on the 94 westbound on the way home from work before the clutch began slipping. I was 25 years old and probably weighed all of 145 pounds, which may have helped. It was a beautiful run, my chin on the tank and my gaze on the instruments.

Damn, now I want to make another Arizona run.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Top speeds stories are always interesting considering what it takes to get old naked frame pushrod bikes over 120 mph

My dad swears that he once pinned the speedo on my '74 Police Eldo at 120, many moons ago. Said he had it there for about two seconds, before shutting it down.

It's hard to beat I-40 from Newport or the I-40/I-81 interchange to the Knox County line.  If there's traffic, it's usually going pretty good and you just blend in.  If there's not, it's pretty sweet.  Riding up 19-23 & 25-70 through Hot Springs to Newport is a nice way to get there on a Guzzi...

Those are what I would have expected, maybe a tad less. Maybe the Mayor needs to find some Sunoco 260 which we had back in the day. As for a Stone, my ‘98 EV would touch 120. Not going by the speedo which was useless but the tach was reading around 6K in 5th. With its 8:33 rear end the 7200 redline calculated out to about 143. Not stock but with simple intake, exhaust and fueling mods.  FWIW I did do a track day on the EV.
