2002 California Stone frame modification.
« on: November 27, 2024, 10:40:45 AM »
Hi All,
I have purchased a 2004 V11 Sport engine out of a Coppa Italia.  I plan to install it in my 2002 California Stone.
Looking at the engine,  I noticed it has a rather nice looking kickstand attached to it, and that the engine mounts differently than the California engine. The V11 Sport models have bolt on front downtubes. I think that it may be advantageous to modify my California frame to accept the V11 Sport mounting,  by cutting off the down tubes and fabricating a bolt on version similar to that used on the V11 Sport models. The main advantage being for ease of maintenance.  With a removable front tube assembly pulling the engine would be easy, just remove the front tube assembly,  all the hoses and wires, and unbolt the transmission from the engine.  The swing are rear wheel,  and transmission can remain in place. The motorcycle without the engine could then be rolled around since the wheels remain in place. I would also fab new shortened bottom rails. I am thinking about making the new parts out of stainless steel which I will polish to near chrome appearance. It would definitely be a lot of work,  machining and welding,  but it might be fun and, if I can get it all right,  be really cool looking as well.
Has anyone done this type of modification before?
Any thoughts on possible disadvantages?
Thanks

I would find a professional, plenty out there. It's your ass. That's if the cover lines up w/downtube angle. I'd just swap front covers & pan if it don't fit.

I knew it was done, I have one of Ed's swingarms on my LM3 w/Sport 1100 back wheel to match same front end.

A Big THANK YOU Charley!!!

Ed's design is very simular to what I am thinking, however; in my design the front engine mount would bolt on where it meets the headtube approximately,  and also to the frame behind the headtube. Only difference would be the front triangle engine mount would bolt on.
Thanks

Just change the timing chest cover and use the original Tonti mounting point.

What is your expected end result? Sounds like you are moving away from a California style cruiser.

I recently discussed this with a friend who has modded tonti frames for his racebikes, including changing the steering head angles. My eyes glazed over after hearing the costs to do it right and all the things I didn't consider.

I figure I'd be better off buying a V11 sport or a Breva 1200.

My 2 cents.
