V7 850 engine light come on!
« on: December 02, 2024, 12:09:47 PM »
So today I left home and my fuel light came on quite soon after (1 mile) but I knew I could easily arrive at my destination before fuelling. So I park up and then leave and the bike suddenly feels very different - like trying to pull away in 3rd gear and the engine nearly dies before saving it with the clutch. I’m trying to accelerate away and it’s like it ran out of fuel - very stuttery like running out of fuel. I thought I could definitely do more than 7 miles on the reserve.
Then after a few more splutters and strange engine sounds the engine light comes on. I struggled to get more than 20mph out of it but it wouldn’t! Luckily I could coast downhill but by the bottom it seemed “ok”. I limped to a petrol station thinking that would fix it but afterwards it did the same thing. First 2 minutes of the journey really spluttery - 20mph limit - then “ok” (but still not perfect) the second time the engine light flashed for about 10 seconds and then went solid.
Will take to a garage asap but want to know what I’m getting into!!
Thank you!

I was going to suggest burping the fuel tank (releasing pressure by temporarily removing the fuel cap), but if it continued with the issue after fueling up, then…

Definitely need more information. Like:

How long ago was your last ride?

What does your airbox and air filter look like?

Any moisture / rain / funky atmospheric conditions lately? Recently hose the bike down?

Any recent work done on the bike?

Are all the sensors in place? Fuel injectors fully clicked in?

Any custom fuel mapping done?

How long ago was your last ride? I ride to work every day

What does your airbox and air filter look like? I have no idea!!

Any moisture / rain / funky atmospheric conditions lately? Recently hose the bike down? Not particularly. It hasn’t rained in a while and isn’t too cold

Any recent work done on the bike? Nope

Are all the sensors in place? Fuel injectors fully clicked in? I wouldn’t know how to check!

Any custom fuel mapping done? Nope

There is a lot of things this could be. Fuel pump/pressure regulator issue for instance with the sputtering.

If this bike has Traction Control, I would check the tire pressure and make sure they at at least 30 PSI. The TC can act something like this if the tires are very low. Also look for a flickering TC light when it cuts out.
