I think the trip sounds like you would be hard pressed to do the same on your own dime for (much) less.  My only difference would be riding a lot more miles on a 5 day trip. I am no Iron Butt, but 100-150mi/day seems like a lot more managed itinerary than I would be looking for. For the cost of food/lodging/bike rental or transport, doesnt seem easy to beat on a dollars and cents basis.

Also, any motorcycle trip into MT that doesnt take you to the Shonkin Sag and/or Flathead Valley is a non-starter for me  :thumb: But of course I am biased having lived in Greenough and Helena
When I did the California trip in 2021 we did quite a bit more than the mileage listed in the advertisement.

I'm wondering if they do an assessment of the riders in the group to determine the miles and the pace.  My wife organizes equestrian trips for her and her friends and then the outfitters learn that they are all experienced riders they up the experience to challenging.

While they had the skeleton of the trip planned (to include stopping points with hotels each night) they did adjust the itinerary daily to get to the best roads between point A and point B.  As is usual in motorcycling, it was about the ride not the destination.  Probably experience levels of the guests were a factor.

I don't think there's any restrictions on where or how long you ride if you don't want to follow the group.

Hopefully there will be at least two groups: Fast Folks who want to scrape pegs and Tourist Riders who want to enjoy the view. I'm definitely in the later group.

For those who have done guided trips like this, how much do you tip the guides? I've read everything from 'toss the guy a 50' to 10% of the event which would be $250. It's 4 days of riding BTW.

I asked the guy in charge if tipping the tour leader was ok. He told me no tipping.  That’s was the MG Experience USA in 2021…

Gotta love the Europeans... If this was a US-based company trip, you'd be presented with an ipad prefilled to 15%-20%-25% tip options every time the guide flipped on their turn signal

I wish we'd just pay people a fair wage.  I don't get it when I pick-up take out and not getting "service".   I'm sure it's me, being the resident jackass here but I don't get the rules of the road.  I try to give 20% when I'm in a sit down place.  15% used to be the rule.

That would be especially admirable if was an Italian home office employee, because in that case he was probably making Euro 1500 or 2000 a month take home.

So, you'd rather everything cost 20% more, but no tipping?

Personally, in the service industry I would rather they "earn" their tip by providing a great customer experience.  That weeds out the slackers.

Less than a week away! Here's the route:

There will be several stops throughout the tour including Old Faithful and the Yellowstone falls.

The only caution I would have on a trip”like this is the temptation to ride so fast that you are not enjoying it because you are concentrating so hard on keeping up with the group who are doing the same thing that you don’t see anything but the road in front of your wheel.I have had some recent rides like that and they were not really fun for me.Unless you are there to thoroughly test the capabilities of the new bike, take it easy and enjoy the ride.

That's the plan - ride with the tourists, not the knee draggers.

In my experience the Ricky Racers are more concerned with ego and showing everyone how fast they can go.  Until they, or someone else ends up in the woods on their back, or worse. That’s why they make race tracks.  Smell the roses.

If anyone is going on the Yellowstone trip I recommend riding the Chief Joseph Memorial Highway, endless curves and constant climbs and decents.

The Yellowstone ride experience was outstanding!. We took off from Bozeman, MT for Red Cloud on day one, riding a mix of roads ranging from in-town to 70 mph sweepers to a little 90+ super slab. Day 2 on the Beartooth Highway was epic as was Chief Joseph Highway. Yellowstone riding was a mixed bag of beautiful 30-50 mph roads but also very heavy tourist traffic spots where it was bumper to bumper for a while. Saturday afternoon was heavy thunderstorms with poor visibility.

Overall it was a very well run tour with great food, good lodging and epic roads. I'll be looking to sign up again next year - hopefully to ride a new Stelvio.

Here's my impression of the V100 Mandello which I rode 95% of the time:

I rode about 740 miles (18 hours) on the V100 Mandello. This was the Marine Aviation limited edition which comes with heated grips and quick shifter but not the semi-automatic suspension of the S model. The four rain modes - Sport, Street, Tour and Rain - have subtle but noticeable differences. I used Tour most of the time which had smoother steady speed behavior for most of the ride but switched to Sport for Beartooth Highway and other twistier bits. Saturday afternoon was heavy rain so I went with that mode which really softens throttle response and keeps the aero wings deployed while the bike is running. More about those in a bit.

The riding position is very reminiscent of my Griso with slightly flat bars and higher, more rear set pegs. Seat height was lower than expected. I felt more 'in' the bike than on it and was able to flat foot at stop without having to scooch forward despite my stumpy 30" inseam legs. For Beartooth and twisty the position is great but long hours in the saddle on less challenging roads left my knees and hips sore. The two pillion riders who were on V100's said their accommodations were 'ok' but that the V85 was much more comfortable. Their seat is about 4" higher than the rider and both felt the seat was too small for long days. The electronic adjustable windscreen worked well for me in the low position with clean air above my shoulders. The upper position created a little buffeting. For longer rides a larger tour screen would be better and above 40 mph (maybe 50) the adjustment is disabled, ostensibly to prevent over-stressing the motor with too much wind pressure.  Seat is firm like most OEM saddles and my butt was burning by the end of the day even with my sheepskin pad.

Rating: B- largely due to my old joints and preferences.

The handling is a pretty perfect balance of stability and agility. The long swing arm keeps the bike planted at 80+ mph sweepers and 90+ straights. I hit 104 when passing a truck and the bike was rock steady, undisturbed by the speed or truck turbulence. The 20 mph switchbacks were easily taken at nearly doubly that speed and the bike smoothy transitions from side to side. Front brakes are stout with good feel, only needing one or two fingers at most. The rear is easily modulated and was fine for trail braking into turns. Ride quality was a little harsh but that's mostly because I'm accustomed to the V85's plushness and not really playing with settings to tune the bike to my liking.

Rating: A

The new water cooled engine is a revelation. It's almost Aprilia like but still a Guzzi. While it pulls cleanly from 2500 rpm it buzzes and shudders a little, preferring revs of 3500 or more. We had to get some more miles on the engine but by the afternoon of day 2 we accumulated enough to change the shift light and use the upper rev range. Below 5000 the torque is good but above that the engine pull like the proverbial freight train. It's also smoother there and I found myself leaving it in 3rd gear to run from 30-65 mph.

Engine Rating: A+

The quick shifter took some getting used to. At partial throttle is was clunky and jerky and just didn't work well. one of the Piaggio guys set me straight, explaining that it should be used with full or closed throttle. I did that and it worked pretty much perfectly with smooth, seamless up and down shifts. I quickly adopted to this and have to say when used correctly, the quick shifter transmission is the best one I've ever experienced on a Guzzi.

Transmission Rating: A

Picking at nits:
- The horn must have been sourced from an Aprillia scooter with a feeble 'meep-meep' that I could barely hear on the road.
- Cruise control is also sourced from Aprillia and is at 12 o'clock high where you can't reach it with your thumb OR index finger without removing your hand from the grip.
- There is NO storage under the seat. I was able to fold and jam my baseball cap under the pillion section but then it wouldn't release. I wound up putting my cap in another bike's top case.
- The throttle spring feels heavier than the V85. Even with my cramp buster my wrist was aching by the end of the day and that was with using cruise as much as possible. Can't really blame Guzzi as it's an Euro regulatory thing but still, modification are needed for all-day riding.

So, would I trade my V85 for a V100? No. For all the reasons I sold the Griso I wouldn't make a V100 my primary bike. It's too cramped and too stiff for where and how I ride.

When (if?) a new V100 Stelvio is released it may be a very different outcome. I'll be sure to sign up for THAT riding experience!

Excellent...hard to beat riding in that area of the country, simply spectacular roads and scenery.

No group photo at the top of the Beartooth?

You mention Red Cloud (?)...the picture looks like Red Lodge at the base of the Beartooth on the Montana side.

Did you guys make it all the way thru Yellowstone down to the Tetons and into Jackson Hole for a loop or where did the ride end up?

Sounds like great fun!!

When my friend and I rode in Yellowstone last July, the only time it wasn’t horrible was early in the morning before the tourons hit the roads. The most enjoyable ride was when we rode out to West Yellowstone on the way to the Idaho Guzzi rally.Yellowstone was sweltering hot during the day and chilly at night.

@egschade, awesome write up and glad you enjoyed the experience!

In an earlier post you wrote "ride with the tourists, not the knee draggers.", but in your writeup you mentioned doubling the speed in corners and passing trucks at triple digits!  If that is the ride with the tourists pace I probably won't be doing one of those tours.   :undecided:

Or was it just the bike that felt so competent that you couldn't resist running with the knee draggers?   :bike-037:

The throttle spring on my 2022 V85TT is definitely stiff.  I have to grab the throttle higher up so my wrist is level when holding speed and good leather gloves provide the friction needed to hold it steady.  Definitely use the cruise control whenever possible.
