NGC Winchester rifle question NGC
« on: April 07, 2018, 08:49:26 PM »
Just looking over my old 30/30 and notice the rear site elevator is missing.. I found one on line ($10) but the question is, does it fit just by capture under the buckhorn sight?   can it be installed with out removing the sight? or how is the sight removed?

The ramp lives in a dovetailed lug.  Drift it out sideways, insert the elevator and drift it back in so it is centered on the barrel.

On most of my rifles you just had to carefully lift up the rear site and slide the elevator in place. The elevator is held in place by the sight.

The elevator is held against the barrel by the spring tension of the ramp. Has the ramp lost its tension, for the part to go missing? Will it hold a new part in place?
When I used to work on my open sight rifles, The whole rifle was secured by its barrel in front of the fore end, in a padded vice. Using thumb and fore finger, it is easy to lift the ramp by the buckhorn. The elevator can be slid out rearwards but you might need a circular motion at the same time.
You can make an elevator out of sheet or flat-stock, aluminium but it's labour intensive.

Gently lift the sight in a way that doesn't scratch anything and slide in the ramp. From the picture you have sufficient tension. The ramps are normally lost in soft cases or rifle racks when bumped.

I didn't suggest simply lifting the ramp and sliding the elevator under it because if it fell out due to a lack of spring tension, lifting the ramp enough to get the elevator into place could make the problem worse.

If you need to remove the rear sight it was fitted in the dovetail slot right to left, so drift out left to right.

I made one some years back by cutting a wedge of thick sheet metal and then filing notches in it. Cold blued it after deburring. My Marlin lever rifle didn't care where it was made. Took it to a 25 yard range and sighted it in!
yeah, I might be addicted to brake fluid. But I can stop any time I want.

Good info. Pay attention.

This is what I would do.  I have bought a couple of rifles with missing elevators and have replaced them using this method.

However, I do not recall ever losing the elevator on any of the rifles I owned.  Always assumed the previous owner removed it for some reason.

Yeah the old "I'm hitting over the target so I have to lower the sights" modification rather than using "Kentucky windage"

With my Swiss k31 I aim 1 foot lower and about 3 feet to the left at 300 yds (with my reloads)
