Hailwood also said he always felt safer on a bike than in a race car , something about if you crash on a motorbike you just slid along the road a bit , in a car you went bang and stopped .

The picture holding pride of place in our old flat was a picture of Mike the Bike on his Honda 250/6 cranked hard over in a left hander.

Amazing rider.

Killed in a car pile up going to get fish and chips I understand.

I really respect riders from those days...when horsepower was far ahead of frame, suspension, tire, track safety, and fueling development...big brass ones required for sure... :thumb:

Remember du Hammel on the Kawasaki. 16 gallon tank, 5 fillups to do the Daytona 500 with so much horsepower that it just shredded the rear tires of the time. His team pioneered the gulp filler for motorcycles.

Ask Bazza about those shredded rear tires . OK , a bit late for that .

Great video!                            :thumb:

One of the things most people don't realize is how brutal it is laying on the tank with your chin while getting banged up going over bumps.

After a very short bit you want to sit up but you put your head down and flatten because you know it's faster...........and continue with the beatings

Went to a talk once with Jim Readman and Ago. Jim was his normal down to earth self (RIP) and a lovely guy, taking the micky out of Phil Read who phoned in. Ago got a rapturous welcome as you would expect. After Ago's talkly bit the obvious question came up as who was the best rider, were the older riders who rode 3 classes a day better than the modern riders.  Ago was a diplomatic Italian as ever and wouldnt say but did say that when Hailwood was on form, he was very hard to beat.

He also mentioned Saarinen was a very talented rider and hard to pass.

The original "Flying Finn". :thumb:

As a young rider I remember a story about him.  He was at a race meet and had blown up both his bikes.  He was standing watching the racing and a young guy came up and said he had a special he had built and he would be real chuffed for him to race it.  It was built from two 125 Rotax engines that the kid had grafted together to make a 250.  Saarinen said that he could guarantee that it would not come back in one piece but the kid said that even if he got one lap in he would be real happy.

Saarinen went out and led the works riders for over half the race before the homebuilt finally grenaded.  The kid was over the moon and yes, Saarinen could indeed ride!

Good chance that KR would not have ever signed with Yamaha to race GP's if Saarinen hadn't died .

I think Yamaha would have eventually figured out who could get the job done, meaning the 500 GP championship, three times in a row, starting in his first year.  I don't think the Europeans have got over the humiliation to this day

Dunno , Saarinen was on his way . Heck , it was widely reported that Roberts squeezed out Baker because he didn't want to race him in Europe , and the Yamaha was at least ten HP up on Bazza's Suzuki .

Next video up with Joey Dunlop!

Four years later, the then-invincible/unbeaten 1000cc Yamaha R1 was on the scene, and Dunlop had a couple to contend with at the Ulster GP.  He was riding that same old-clunker 750cc V-four Honda.  The race starts at the one minute mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wamdJQXI9w
