Not sure what 2001 has but 2002 is tubeless and has the clever rims where the spoke ends come to the outside of the rim. Don't know why they did not continue with that.

To check that the recall has been done you need to lift a rocker cover and look at the top of the rocker arms. If it has the ordinary nut adjuster and the top of the adjustable bit looks as if it's been broken off, the recall has been done.

I'd be very surprised if you found a hydro with no recall done that is still running.

The details depend on the model.

If it is an EV it has tubeless rims. If it is a Bassa, it most likely has tubeless. If it is a Cal Special, it is 50/50. No hydro.

Your question sounds as if you are new to Guzzi.  The "Cali" was a basic plan that was released over many years in many variations.  In 2001 there would have been variants with or without tubeless wheels.  If you don't know the specific model of the bike, how about posting a digital picture or two so that we can evaluate and advise properly.

Or the OP could google image 'Guzzi California' and look at the rims and figure it out himself.
If the spokes ends up on the side wall of the rim it's tubeless.

Only 3 types of rims on the Californias for the last 15 years or so:

Tubeless:

Tubeless:

Non tubeless:

Ahem. My Cali EVT hydro (or I should say ex-hydro) was 1st registered in 2002. It appears they were not yet available in the US at that time.

Side of the road in the middle of nowhere with rain in the way and with a screw through the tire.  The tubeless wheels suddenly look absolutely beautiful.

I love the look of the early EV tubeless. Reminds me of Borrani alloy rims I had on a bike a long time ago.

after a few years that steel rim w/tube will look perfectly crappy unless you go anal on care for them.. the first gen EV rims are aluminum and a hassle to clean but will last longer cosmetically..

and then there's this..

CRC, the following is a photo of a Hydro head.

Note that there is no lock nut and broken off adjuster above the push rods. On this one the recall HAS NOT been done.

If the one you are looking at is like the one above, frankly, considering the trouble and probably expense you are going to have to go to I would be inclined to leave it alone.

Having said that I'm of the impression that a hydro engine that was sorted before it clapped out  is a fine tractable beast. Quiet too. I certainly liked mine until it clapped out. (Failed because the recall had not been done). They do have a lot to recommend them.

You need also to be pedantic about putting in the correct grade of oil with them though. 5w40 full synthetic. (though I used 5w60 in mine.)

If you do a search on this site for "Hydro Recall" you will find a lot of info about all this in previous threads. Like this one;

or this.

Or Stone tube type wheels, after conversion to tubeless, Patrick!
