Anyone use one of these to add to their motorcycle seat?
« on: February 20, 2017, 03:15:20 PM »
This looks like a good alternative to the current stuff out there.  Looks like a good addition for a long distance riding.

Gel seats are notorious for getting extremely hot when the sun is beating down on them. Another no so good trait is gel seats really retain that heat for a long time.

Seat beads while not panacea do help with pinch points and more importantly they air flow under you.

I've had good luck with Corbin seats and Airhawk.  My MuZ has a gel under the seat cover that works w/o getting hot.  Had a water/sponge seat that was pretty good as long as you didn't have too much water in it that would make your body swish back & forth during acceleration.    Never see these 1s your looking at now.

I would note that the detailed info says the thing is nearly three inches thick. That might work on your piston-based office chair, but I'm not sure how it would work with a motorcycle seat!

I got a Corbin seat and an Airhawk cushion for my EV in an attempt to dampen nerve pain in my lumbar spine. Not perfect but much better now. Either one helps by itself, but if I had to choose only one it would be the Airhawk over the Corbin. My 2c.

Alaska Leather sheepskin

Cool in the summer, warm in the winter.  Been using sheepskin seat covers since the '70's and you can get them in shag...

I talked to the dude at seargent seat one time. They use similar technology to wheelchair seating in the foam products they use. He even knew about pressure mapping for the seating industry. I was impressed. I'd send a seat to them if I wasn't such a tight ass

I've had bad luck with gel and air pads of different types.

The last time I rebuilt my seat I tried memory foam.  Dual density.  Works well....except.  It works based on temperature.  When it is cold out it is really stiff.  Takes a bit of time for your butt to warm it up.  When hot it seems a bit 'mushy' but it still works well.  Other than that it was really comfortable for long days in the saddle.

If I were to build another one I'd just use three different densities of foam in different areas of the seat and shape it well.

It takes three layers with the most dense foam on the bottom for support. Soft layer on top to float the ischial tuberosities and reduce pressure. I've seen the documentation in pressure mapping paraplegic butts. It's one of my former jobs.

Corbin seats are not soft.  What they do is spread your butt weight around for comfort.  On most my bikes I'm sitting forward which helps me.  On my scooters I use a back rest  since I'm sitting upright.  Otherwise I can't stay comfortable for very long.  My back is shot.

I tried an Air-Hawk on the original seat on my '98 EV...no good. Got a Corbin and could not be happier. I then purchased a '07 Breva with an original seat and tried the Air-Hawk, wooden beads and genuine sheepskin and no good. Got a Corbin and couldn't be happier. My '86 Lemans and /5 BMW both have Corbin's as well. I prefer a more firm saddle for long distance as is the same for the cycles I pedal as well.

I talk to hundreds of custom seat owners every riding season-those folks are the ones who purchase my product to protect their (can be quite sizeable) investment.  Been fortunate enough to apprentice with three top custom seat builders and own a sample of almost every known big name custom seat builder.

Bottom line (pun intended) is that our individual anatomy is so different that several alternative approaches will have success depending on the user.

Corbin is the prime example.  It's unique in that it's WAY more of a love it or hate it reaction from customers than any other brand.  If you have a "Corbin" bottom nothing works as well and if not they can easily be worse than stock.

Weight distribution is key, along with shape and how it relates to the rider combined with hip tilt and angle.  Several layers of built up foam of varying density and thickness is a proven method but it does require talent and experience along with a willingness to build and test plenty of seats to come up with a formula.  Others use a cast or molded single weight core and shape it from there.  And there are other ways, too.

Screens and seats-two of the most individualist things in motorcycling.

Sheep skin is awesome. It's warm in winter, cool in summer, firm but yielding.

I got mine from goodwool.com.au

They have patterns for many guzzis. The Stelvio one is two-piece, fits snugly, came in several colours.

I originally got it to keep my girlfriend comfy on the back seat, but I am 100% converted. I would instantly put one on any bike I own.

It even keeps my butt drier in the rain.

This ... plus 1000.   Seat threads ALWAYS go the same way - every seat maker and every pad maker gets mentioned by someone as being THE solution, an even mixture of AirHawks, gel pads, sheepskins and beads for the top, and Corbin, Sargent, Russell, and the various Mayers for custom seats.

Russell for me, and then I don't have to worry about the rest.   But then, I've said that before ... :thumb:

The V7ll seat is hard. I ordered a sheepskin last week. It's worth a try at £20. If that doesn't make long rides better, I'll get a seat made by Moto Strada.

If you have a "Corbin" bottom nothing works as well and if not they can easily be worse than stock.
To be comfortable with a Corbin you also need a Corbin sized wallet.

Yep, I had a Russell too.  If I had a seat with very little room for foam it's the way I would go again.  With the Loop and Tonti frame bikes there is more than enough room for the layers of foam to make a really plush seat.  The one I made was more comfortable than my Russell on the Honda.

It's all about the sit bones and tail bone and your lean angle on the bike.

Have yet to meet any 750 Breva rider who needed a different seat than what the bike came with, other than seat height, and if you were shorter they covered that too.  The Breva seat was very much like the Corbin design.  :thumb:   But if you sit upright you're harder to please on a MC unless it comes with a sprung tractor type seat.
