Looking for WV route advice
« on: October 07, 2019, 08:21:25 PM »
Hi,  I'm headed to the Pipestem resort on Friday. A friend and I are actually leaving on Thursday and stopping on the Skyline drive.

Does anyone have a good route to go from the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Pipestem resort? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Eric.

From where on the BRP?

If it's from the Roanoke area, you can't miss by getting on VA311 at Salem, riding up through Paint Bank, VA to Sweet Springs, WV, then WV3 West through Union and on to Hinton. At Hinton take WV20S to Pipestem.

Since you are going to be on Skyline Drive, I assume you are heading a bit southwest to WV.
First, about the only 'boring slab' I have found in WV, is route 50 from Parkersburg to Clarksburg. Always hated that stretch for some reason. It is hard to find anything boring on WV.
39 through Marlinton WV would be a nice ride. Then 20 south to Pipestem.

Here in Australia we have a saying..
“A silly route is the best one..!”
Strange logic, fair to say.

What do you mean "stop on Skyline Drive"?  Just before, ON, or after?

Leaving Thursday morning. Stopping at Skyland Resort ON the Skyline Drive to have dinn er with some friends and stay there overnight. Friday morning we'll continue down to the end of the Skyline Drive, continue on the Blue Ridge Parkway and eventually turn Right and head North eventually ending up at the Pipestem Resort.  Thanks.

As long as you stay off of Interstate 64, and (to a lesser degree) US460, there are NO bad choices if you follow that basic plan .... State roads, old Federal highways, county roads, I've used 'em all and they're all good.

I'll second that emotion.  Stay at the Old Clark Inn in Marlinton (say hi to Nelson and Andrea from Peter Y.).  They cater to motorcyclists.  Then go to Paint Bank, Cass, and Snowshoe.  You'll be glad you did....great riding and neat stops along the way.

Riding the Skyland Drive is fantastic....for about 20 miles.  Then you have another 100 miles to go.  It's beautiful but the 35 mph speed limit gets to be a chore.  I have ridden it all (heck, just hiked the entire length last May) so I am familiar with the place.  The Blue Ridge Parkway is also beautiful but the 45 mph speed limit is also a chore after a hundred miles or so.  Be aware that these are federal land so if you get a speeding ticket it's not as simple as mailing in the $$$$.  On the BRP you have to show up in federal court, that's in Roanoke.  Just watch your speed.
