V7 oil filter location
« on: March 17, 2016, 02:30:04 PM »
Hey, where's the oil filter located on a V7?

Pardon my lack of basic knowledge on the matter, but I was just reading about someone dropping the sump cover on a big block to change the filter. Is this the case with the small block as well? I was convinced that routine maintenance on the small Guzzi was a completely painless affair.

Like an airhead it uses a cartridge filter that is accessed/replaced through a small (1 through bolt retained) cover in the sump.

If memory serves at the front right corner of said sump.

On the big block V7" there was no oil filter just drain and refill. The filtered motors did not come along until around 1973. All small block V7's have oil filters. There is a plate on the bottom of the sum where you remove one bolt and the oil filter cartridge will drop right out.

Interesting thing about the filter less motors is they run just as long or longer than oil filtered motors.

The cover is on the bottom right of the sump. It is finned, and blends in well.  It's got an O-ring, and mine tends to stick. Gently prying will drop it out.  DON'T OVER TIGHTEN it.  They're prone to breaking with too much torque on that one bolt.

Always good to ask when you're unsure.  Much better than screwing something up.  Don't ask how I know.

Here's a good diagram on the oil drain & filter on the 750cc small block motors for you:

There is also a fine wire mesh oil "filter" way up inside the engine bottom end.  Have to pull the sump clear down to get to it and it only needs cleaning during overhaul anyway.  Just fyi.

On the same note what do you guys pay for a V7 filter in US$?
I paid just over CaD$25 which is US$18.78  I thought that seemed steep.

From a real old-timer and For What It's Worth, there is a comprehensive on-line Guzzi 750cc reference file here:

  https://www.dansher.com/bikepix/Guzzi/_V7_fyi.txt

I rarely maintain the file any more 'cuz I sold my reliant Breva 750 a while back.  :violent1:

If anyone wants to take over maintenance and hosting of that file, send me a PM.

Seems excessive to me. Over here they used to be $AUD22 individually, till I found I could buy in bulk at $15. But the Aussie dollar has taken a nose dive in recent months - hate to think what they are now. I have noticed that even on various overseas suppliers' sites, they have never been particularly cheap.

Unlike the Carberry Enfield which was designed to use the Mazda/Subaru spin on filter (Enfielders are generally even more parsimonious than  guzzisti) - easily available everywhere for $AUD6-7.
