I am happy to report that the 1000S performed perfectly on its first real shakedown ride!  The fueling was perfect.  The bike handles the twisties very well.  The sound of the Staintunes is glorious!   Not a drop of anything to be seen from the bike.    I loaned my Griso to a riding buddy I am trying to convert to MG.   He really liked the Griso.

We had a post ride toast to Mark Linkous.  A perfect day.

Great job on your 1000S. It looks great! I would like to suggest an update for the bike.I have owned a 91 1000S since new and have had great fun with it over the years. Recently I added a Browns side stand to replace the marginal side stand on mine.I cut off the Browns BMW bracket and my shop guy made a plate to bolt it to the mounts where the original stand mounted. Instant great side stand that is easy to deploy and has the bike secure on the stand. Most BMW airhead friendly shops have or can get the Browns side stand for 81-84 Aieheads.I have no worries about parking on the side stand now and it can be returned to original with undoing two nuts1

Thanks for that.  It sounds like a good solution.

The stock sidestand is certainly  not confidence inspiring, but I don't think it will fail.  Since it makes me a bit nervous I usually just deploy the centerstand.

That's a sharp looking green&black.
Are the mirrors original or did you find something similar?

Those look like the mirrors from my Norge, only painted black. Similar, but not quite like the ones on the Piaggion BV350 as well.

The original mirrors are chrome and rectangular.  I thought these look appropriate.  If I ever find originals I will replace them.

I can't find originals for my V65 and I agree these mirrors look decent.
Do you recall where you got them?
Thanks!

Dave,

Looks good. If I was a better man, I'd sell you the one I have on the shelf but I just can't. If Guzziowner or Leafman posts news of my departure, contact my wife and she might be able to send it on.

FINAL DETAIL!!
« Reply #102 on: November 03, 2019, 03:59:52 PM »
Although the NOS headlight assembly was correct, the finishes were not.

I had the trim ring chromed - they did a very nice job of retaining the CEV engraving, and I had the bucket painted gloss black.

Now I can call it done!!

Hi Dave,

Congratulations with the rejuvenation of your 1000S. I am a big fan of the 1000S. May I ask your attention for some details that are often overlooked during a repair work? Some bolts and nuts are not the right model. For example, the bolts of the instrument holder must be black. Some bolts and nuts on your motorcycle are different from the original, namely on the headlight, the exhaust mounting and the passenger bracket next to the seat. The handle rubbers should be from Ariete. I still come across them sometimes in Italy. The mirrors are no longer available from the original supplier, but copies are easy to find on eBay and look very similar to the original.
To clarify, I have taken some pictures today of the details that I want to draw your attention to. The photos are of an unrestored and unmodified Moto Guzzi 1000S that is still owned by the first owner.

Cheers, Daan

Daan,  thank you very much for all of the great pictures!  Congratulations on a very good first post on the WG forum!  Welcome.  Please introduce yourself on the general forum.

Regarding the instrument bolts.  They have been replaced with black oxide bolts.

Both of my 1000S have had hex head bolts for attaching the headlight.  Since my other 1000S (recently sold) is a 1200 mile original as it rolled off the line, I am assuming that different hardware was used for the headlight bolts during the production run.

My had grips are the closest thing I could find, but now that you have let me know the grips were made by Ariete, I have a chance to find correct ones!  I did not know the manufacturer's name, Thank you!

Daan, djkid  thought my 1000S needed a correct set of Ariete grips.  Daan was going to make a trip to Italy in February and and offered to attempt to procure a set of these rare Arietes with hole for bar end weights from a source he knew of in Milan.   With much persistence, phone calls, and emails, Daan was successful.  Then the - lockdown happened and he was on an evacuation flight back to the Netherlands with Ariete grips in hand!  After more than a month in transit they arrived today and of course are perfect!

How do you thank someone who went through all of that to ensure that a 1000S many thousands of miles away that is owned by someone he did not know has the correct hand grips...

My hat is off to you Daan!

The 1000S will soon be wearing the correct grips!  I never thought I would see that day.  Very cool!

The cosmetic damage to the left Staintune has always bothered me.  On a lark I thought about asking Staintune if they could make another 1000S exhaust system.  I fully expected them to say no, but was very surprised that they said they could make a set for me!  It was a bit expensive but will be worth it.   It will be finished in 1 week.  I ordered it a month ago.
