Title: motorcycle TRAILER insurance?
Post by: 9fingers on May 15, 2022, 11:48:44 AM
I have a very small one rail bike trailer, works perfectly, got it cheap, but getting insurance on it has been tricky. Anyone had any luck getting a cheap policy on such a device? I only use it 3 or 3 times a year.

Not sure why you need to insure the trailer separately.  I have State Farm.  If I understand correctly , they cover the trailer as long as it remains attached to the tow vehicle.  Now, if it breaks free????

Are you trying to insure against liability?  Your car or truck insurance should extend to that.
Are you trying to insure against damage loss to the trailer itself?  Its not that valuable.
Are you trying to insure against loss or damage to the contents or what you are carrying?  Use more straps!

School me if there is more I do not understand.

Liability extends from the towing vehicle. The trailer and any contents are covered by your homeowner or renter policy, up to the limits of your policy. For what you have, additional insurance should not be needed, which is likely why you can't find any to purchase.

I understand the same thing.  My permanently tagged enclosed trailer and annually tagged pop-up camper both "require" liability insurance to have a tag in SC, but the insurance policy of the tow vehicle is the insurance policy.   We just went through that a couple of months ago when our policy renewal showed the trailer insurance but there wasn't a separate bill or pocket card for it.  As long as we paid the normal bill for a vehicle which could tow it, we are fine.   By default, my untagged (also legal in SC for in-state use) utility trailer is also covered by the towing vehicle's liability policy.

I would ask your dmv and/or insurance rep if your paid vehicle liability insurance policy covers a personal use towed trailer or if there is a legal requirement to have separate insurance on both trailer and tow vehicle.

I have AAA insurance.  As far as I know, they do not insure "trailers", but they will insure "motorcycle trailers".  I had to send them a picture.
They insure the trailer as long as it is connected to the tow vehicle, but I wanted insurance for the off chance that it might get separated, and I wanted theft insurance on my aluminum trailer.

In MA a liability endorsement for a trailer is required to register it. It’s no cost and tags onto your vehicle insurance. Comprehensive was about $200.00 a year for a new enclosed hauler.

It's a little complicated in that I don't own or insure my vehicle.  It is a leased vehicle provided by the company I work for, as part of my compensation. And they provide the insurance but have no interest in providing liability insurance for my trailer. I will contact AAA and see if they can provide something.
Thanks

The company insurance should cover you and the trailer unless you are attaching it without permission. Why not ask the insurance agent?

Call an independent insurance agency in your state as all laws vary from state to state. A whole lot easier than getting bum info from the Internet.

I have my house, cars, trailer and bike on Allstate. With the multi discounts the trailer costs $30 a year.

Thanks Eric, we have USAA for house and wife's car but they consider a "trailer" something 20' plus long, and were very high on the price. I have Progressive for my 3 road bikes and will see if they have any relief. I looked into AAA and they don't provide service in our area.

I pay $17 a year to add my enclosed trailer to my insurance policy. That is mostly to cover theft.

I may be wrong, but I think that this might be a situation where asking forgiveness if something happened, may be be better than permission.

I'm almost certain, that an employer provided vehicle and the insurance would be a firm no if you asked.

Once you've asked permission and been denied, you're in a pickle.
