Bent rim help please
« on: January 14, 2022, 05:12:28 PM »
I discovered that my rear wheel ('03 EV spoked tubeless) has a slightly bent rim from what was, most likely, a pothole. Over the winter, while I replace the tire, I'm considering replacing it with a new ($$$ = unlikely) or used (still $$ if you can find them) rim. My other options are having it repaired, or truing and balancing it and then simply leaving it alone and living with it.

I'm wondering about whether repairs on bent rims are a good idea. Will the wheel be "as good as new" and safe after a repair? Of so, who is good?
or
if I just leave it, what's the downside? Any additional wear and tear to seals, tires, anything else?

I'd love to get opinions from you guys (y'all). Thanks

They repaired a bent spoked rim from a Harley I owned. Did a great job.

A bent spoked rim will need to be unlaced and rim straightened and trued if not damaged beyond saving. It will then need to be re laced and  maybe some spokes replaced if damaged. A balance / trueing stand and a spoke torque wrench are required to do a proper job. here's a video that shows the process .

I dropped off my hubs at Woody’s in late June 2021.  It’s now January, 2022, and i’m still waiting for the wheels.  You might want to ask them how long it will take.

How bad is it bent? Is it a little tweaked on one side of the rim or does it move side to side when you spin it?
I have dealt with tweaks with hammers and wood blocks or rubber mallets. All checked with a dial indicator.
Side to side wobbles, send it to an expert.

Probably a good idea. I'd be in line way behind you.

I'd feel better about this if I had a spare hanging around. I'm like a bull in a china shop. On the other hand, how delicate can it be?

Damn! They repaired mine and got it back in about 3 weeks.  Of course, that was in 2020 B.C.    (before -.)
