Charlie,

Geez, I just saw this... glad you were able to walk away and atgatt worked for you.  It's unfortunate that your newest toy was not as lucky.

It took me three tries, but I finally got to see an urgent care doctor earlier today. First place "Med Express" had 13 people ahead of me - I wasn't willing to wait that long. Second place was recommended by sister Nan - UNI Urgent Care in the North End of Hagerstown. They couldn't do x-rays (equipment issue?) so sent me to the other UNI location near Valley Mall. Maybe a 15 min. wait if that. Told me what it would cost up front - $125, and x-rays would be $100.

Results: "Nondisplaced fracture of proximal phalanx of right thumb, initial encounter for closed fracture". Everything else just bruised or sprained. Prescribed 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours for 7 days, and cyclobenzaprine 10 mg tablet - 1 at bedtime for 14 days. Oh, and a splint for my thumb. "It will be $300 if we supply it, buy it at CVS and save." Only $10 at CVS.

I'd like to thank everyone for their concern, and wishes for a speedy recovery. Also, I'd like to thank Blaine Paulus Jr. for unloading the BMW from the moving truck. No way I could have done it myself. The BMW initially doesn't look too bad, but a lot of parts don't line up anymore, I fear the frame is bent in the rear as well as the front. It will most likely be a few weeks before it's fate is known.

Saddlebag full of shrapnel.

Here's a link to my photos from the trip, before to the accident.

Glad you’re okay Charlie.  I’d sue that chick, that was pretty egregious and stupid on her part.  I’m assuming she was insured?

Totaled bike, medical bills, lost wages, etc.  They’ll settle.

Yes, she was insured. I'll see how things unfold over the next few days and decide on the best course of action.

Glad to hear you're relatively OK. Always a judgement call on taking an ambulance ride but everything I read and have been told by EMS folks is to go to the ER unless your absolutely NOTHING hurts  or feel off. It's as much an insurance/legal thing as getting care.

Hopefully the driver's insurance doesn't play the 'refused medical care' card and pays all your medical bills, U-Haul cost and/or gaps on the BMW's value. Have a good long talk w/ your insurance agent about what you've paid out of pocket.

Dang it Charlie, thats a terrible way to end a great adventure. Like everyone said its good to hear that you are ok.
I was hoping to hear more about your fun with that bike, I have an Alazurra, very similar (in my mind), Corbin seat and Works shocks. the only problem ever is old brakes....

That left turn is the worst fear I carry riding. Never been got but got close a dozen times. Glad you're not seriously hurt, I speared the windshield of a Pontiac that crossed the centerline and broke 4 vertebrae in my neck. You're very fortunate. FWII, I really hate Cyclobenzaprine; I would only take it if I actually had muscle spasms. Makes me want to stare out the window drinking coffee all day, which is probably ok for a week while you heal.
I recall back in the 90's there were franchises with digital frame machines- any idea if they're still around? That's such a beautiful bike I'd hate to see it parted.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

It's always been one of my worst fears as well. I am definitely very fortunate. I'm still trying to figure out how the bike ended up laying it's left side, and I ended up on my back looking up at the sky without ever hitting my helmet on anything.

I skipped the cyclobenzaprine, didn't feel the need. Feeling a little better today - was actually able to get out of bed this morning without dragging myself with my left arm!  :azn: Left foot is still swollen, but not as much. Abrasion on my left kneecap seems to be healing well.

The K-Bike guys seem to think the frame is fine and that with a new front end, plus a few other parts, it could be back in action. Time will tell. As of yesterday the WV State Police had no record of the accident - "it takes a few days for the report to make it into our system". May takes weeks before anything is resolved.

Another update. I think the "fat lady has sung" for the K75. Looking it over a bit more closely this evening, I found this crack where the frame bolts to the cylinder head on the left side. This could be "the tip of the iceberg" as far as damage and is more than I really want to deal with.

I hope your hand is healing quickly, Charlie.

Shame about the cracked cylinder head.

I'm sure you could find a good used one, but as you say, after
an impact like the one your bike suffered, that damage is but the tip of the
iceberg. Everything will have to be checked for truth and structural
integrity; and you're gonna need at least a cylinder head if not a whole motor.

Glad you are okay. Another adventure in the logbook. In these events you never know how you got there and the bike ended up elsewhere. High sided my T3 and an eye witness told me the bike did a  complete 360° flip. I'm glad it ejected me first.

Engine, transmission, swingarm and final drive are an integrated unit on the K series. Tabs on the engine provide mounting points for steering, seat and suspension. The power train is a major stressed member in the frame. Cracked engine mounting points are common collision damage on those bikes.

Bad news, Charlie. Glad you are OK. There is an awful lot of opportunity for bad things to happen on the road. Many many distractions and incompetent drivers. We can only heave a sigh of relief that you got up and walked (limped?) away.

FWIW I always assume a stopped vehicle may turn in front of me and back off the throttle until they see me and get ready for evasive action.Your crash sounds unavoidable on your part so do not economize on medical expenses as she is liable.Good luck on the recovery process.

This sort of situation is why I ride in town with my fingers resting on the front brake lever and my thumb next to the horn button.  I've had a few opportunities to test my reactions, but the only time I've actually had a collision was from behind.

Not sure if this would have helped in your situation, though.
