Lots of greed and selfish perspectives, yes.  But there's also the reality of being the default manager of such actions, getting stuck with an untenable situation with no simple solution.   The actual grown-ups in the room can't just get on their bikes, ride away and say "f--- it.  It's not my problem now"...  That is the reality of the world. 

I bet it's a lot like running a motorcycle forum....
