My speedo just died!
« on: September 16, 2017, 10:26:55 AM »
I have a fall cable that broke on me due to my negligence and during its replacement it didn't quite get routed correctly and so I took the headlight bracket apart to reroute the cable the speedo housing just laid on the front fender upside down I put it back on very gently and now it doesn't work! You touch it and it breaks?? Lol

Does the odometer still work?
If not, then it is likely still the cable.

did you seat the cable end far enough in at the tranny and is the little collar in place? don't forget the hard washer that drops into the tranny before the cable goes in.

I literally didn't do anything. Unbolted the gauge cluster rolled it over to the front fender.  It sat quietly while I worked.  Brought it back up to its mount and bolted it up.  I can not see how a cable broke or messed up.  The cable must have broken when it was moved. I have no idea. I'm going tear into it when I get home

Ok I got home took the headlight out to access the back of the speedo.  Unscrewed. The cable and the gauge "female" does make the needle jump by hand. Both directions going ez.  The cable will come out of its sheath... I pushed it all the way back in and it still spins. So with the bike in gear on the centerstand if I can spin the cable " into the trans" the cables broke.  Yes?

Edit.  The cable does feel ok.  I went all the way in and it seems to stop.  Maybe it was just loose at the gauge.  Thx

I got tired of jackin' with the old cable system and put in a Speedhut unit.

Now I have direction, elevation, digital, time and accurate MPH.

Lets get back to this for a moment. You say you pulled the cable all the way out of the outer sheath. If it was not broken, then the outer sheath may not be properly seated on the transmission, leaving the inner cable not making contact with the drive. Loosen up the thumb nut on the transmission end of the cable. there is the collar in the above statement. Slide it up so that you can push as much of the sheath into the hole as possible. Then, push the collar down and screw the thumb screw back onto the transmission. You should now be able to rotate the back wheel and see the other end of the cable turning. Put it back into the speedometer and go from there.

I took the tranny end off.  Spun cable.  Gauge moves. Ok reassemble. No action! Wth? It appears when I moved the gauges it pulled the sheath out of the trans.  It's a Rube Goldberg contraption of a tranny end down there! What was Luigi thinking?  I'm messing with it now. geee wiz

Simetimes the inner is just too short to reach both ends at the same time
You can buy an inner kit

It's fixed! Thank you!  I took the RH fuse box cover off. Got in with some stork pliers and pushed the cable "in" while I tightened the nut on the tranny end.  The needle is bouncy but works! I think it was like that before but I dunno??? 🤔 Thank you

I think bouncy=binding.
It did on mine.
I would check for smooth routing and well lubed.

I just went through all the BS of loosing the odometer on my 07 Calvin. You can't
buy the cheep little plastic gears anywhere. I contacted  a guy somewhere out of state that has a box of the gears he bought from a dealership going out of business and if you remove yours, box it up and send it to him he would graciously fix it for 250 bucks and you pay for return shipping. I followed the advise of one of the forum members and went to my local schwinn bike shop and bought a GPS speedometer and odometer for 60 bucks. Works perfectly, speed is always exact as is the odometer. Has trip and reset features and a permanent odometer that you can't accidentally delete. It's rechargeable and last several days between charges.

I'm with Guzzistajohn and ncdan:  Fitted a Speedhut GPS speedo to my V50 II and haven't looked back.  No cables, no wheel sensors, no geared cable take-offs, no mechanical interfaces, no readouts off-target by a percentage.  Only requires one small antenna that can be mounted anywhere you wish.  Lightweight, simple, and unerringly accurate with both speed and distance.  A real step forward.

I really don't want to mess with it again seeing as how it's working now ( leave well enough alone) but if I were to lube the cable from the gauge end what kind of lube should I use? White grease?

Yep.

Did this on my Ballabio.  It was so easy that even I could do it.

Pull the inner cable. Check it and the outer sheath for kinks or damage. Wipe it down with some lithium grease. Reinsert.

Speedometer cables are properly lubricated with speedometer cable lube. It can ge a bit hard to find as flex shafts driven instruments are being replaced with electronic pulse counters.

You don't want to use oil or grease as both of these are effected by temperature. They will induce drag in the cable housing.

Speedometer cable lube is Graphite. Sometimes it is sold suspended in a liquid, sometimes it's dry. You want to clean your flex shafts and the housing until they are thoroughly free of grease or oil. Then apply the graphite lube over the cable and in the housing. The carrier fluid disappears leaving the graphite behind to act as a dry lubricant totally uneffected by temperature.

This procedure produces years of trouble free performance.

Speed hut is the smartest way to replace your speedometer also the tack they both look an work very well.
You can choose the background color you like an basically build it the way you want it.
The price is very reasonable as  well.
