NGC: Any gun collectors here?
« on: December 23, 2015, 06:58:00 AM »
Could not find a gun thread so I thought I would start one.  I was born and raised around guns and have a few in my meager collection.  Being a retired Marine I figured it was time I picked up a Thompson M1.  A nice present for myself.

You would not believe how much fun this is to shoot.  Good thing I reload .45acp ammo because she uses a lot of it :-)

Cool!  The original models with the finned barrels are huge money. I was surprised at how heavy they are. No polymer nut in there!

No special license needed.  The new productions Thompson's are semi-auto and have a 16.5" barrel so all you need is lots of cash.  If you want the model 1927 (finned barrel and drum magazine) plan to spend about $2000, the M1 is about $1400.  I'm doing the paperwork now so I can get the barrel cut down to the military spec of 10.5".

Nice Christmas gift!  I've bought a few airguns recently to goof around in the backyard with.  The broomhandle Mauser is a hoot in full auto but empties the mag in about 2 seconds.  Hopefully the neighbors remain calm, I turn my stereo up real loud first!  :thewife:

Very neat Thompson.  Always liked those.

Yes, I am a collector, of sorts.  Mostly old S&W revolvers and Swedish/Norwegian firearms.  (Hence the forum name "SmithSwede")  Also old Colt revolvers.

I'm more of a competitive shooter than a purist collector.  Bullseye pistol (usually with revolvers), ICORE, IDPA, and high-power rifle, both OTC and long range.

I ran the armory at the 57th MP/Honor Guard Company, USMA...back in the 70/80s. Because we were a 24 hour operation, firearms bound for the West Point Museum would often come through us. One memorable night, a beautiful '20s-vintage Thompson was dropped off. It was pristine, with a finned/tapered barrel, compensator, walnut furniture, and a 50 round drum. Holding that piece of history, I felt like John Dillinger. It was weighty and really solid feeling...I'm sure it handled better on full auto than the flimsy M3 Grease Gun I shot years later. Classic Americana...

I collect shotguns and have a fondness for trap guns especially Perazzi's. I have a MX14 and the wife has an MX8-B.

I have/had about $9,000 into my Perazzi MX14 and it was the lower end of the mid-range priced trap gun spectrum. When the wife and I would travel to shoots with a couple of friends it was nothing to have $40,00 or $50,000+ worth of guns in the car.

I also have really like Remington 870 Wingmaster's. Have them in 12, 16, 28 & .410. Need a 20 gauge to round out the collection.

Gun can become an addiction just like motorcycles.

For an "original" Tommy Gun, you better add another zero.  If you're lucky.

Used to consider myself a collector/shooter but gravitated towards reloading a while back. Was mainly into single and double action revolvers and lever guns but went in several directions when I found something that interested me.  Now I consider myself a reloader that dabbles in guns. Current obsession is the .327 Federal Magnum which has led me to buy 4 revolvers of said caliber in the last 5 months.

Do you have a Lahti?  Anything resembling a Luger is steam punk cool now.  Did you notice the impression in the holster?

I'm also a bullseye shooter and reload but my favorite is probably old .22 target rifles.

A couple years ago I picked up this .45 burner though, an MPA 45 pistol (MAC10 lookalike) but then picked up the carbine parts as well.

I have been into guns since I was a kid. These days I am involved in competitive rifle shooting. Buffalo rifles like the Sharps and Rolling Blocks are shot from 200 to 1000 yards with open sights. Same for vintage military rifles like the O3-A3 Springfield, Swiss K31, Lee Enfield,K98 Mauser and many others from different countries. For a while I was into building AK-47 platform rifles from demilled parts kits using  semi auto after market receivers to replace the cut up originals. A few of these were military configurations that were other wise unavailable here in the US. Commonly known as Krinks they require Class III paper work to be legal due to the short barrels. Gun collecting can be quite an addiction indeed.

Marines can never have enough guns.  I have 18 at last count.  None with paper trail but the last one--I like pre-1964 Winchesters (have 5) and last June bought a spiffy 1952 Mdl. 52 .22LR target rifle with 16x Weaver T-16 scope.  It sits in my safe alongside the Mdls 1890, 63, 71 and 24 (16ga).  Two custom 03 Sporters, 1873 Trapdoor Springfield carbine, 1865 Spencer 11 shot repeating carbine,1838 Edwin Wesson (brother of Frank of S&W fame) percussion rifle (.38 or .40 cal), plus a herd of 1950s-70s Smiths and some older Colts and somehow a Glock 30 snuck in there and a Ruger "Bearcat", to go with the Ruger Mini-30.  I think that's all of them.  Oh, the Remington 742 Fieldmaster.22.  Maybe that's all of them.  Well, I think so.  It's kinda dark in the back of the gun safe, which is right next to my 04 Stone Touring (Guzzi content?).

One recent purchase, a Hi Standard Model "A". Silly, I should probably get a Ruger instead but I like the old American feel, this may be the heaviest .22 auto pistol I've had!

7 shot revolvers and .327 magnums?  Wow, I've never heard of either one and had to wiki them.  Interesting stuff.

I thought I would add that the local motorcycle club of old farts and classic bike riders is having our monthly dinner at the Wilshire Gun Range (OKC).  It combines a gun range with a bar and grill.  I don't think you're allowed to drink before you shoot but you never know.  I might try my pedestrian .357 Trooper and .22 Mk III but I am kinda a tightwad.

Anyway, I usually don't drink more than a single beer and ride a motorcycle.

I don't know about "collecting" so much as amassing.

I recently started to reign back when I contemplated buying a third safe for the shop. Moving things un touched in years to get to another something was getting old.

Somethings however, take up so little room as to warrant liberal indulgence, forbearance... tolerance?

I'd sure like a first-series SP-101 in .327 Federal Magnum.  I've got a snubbie .357 that's really nice.

I don't care for the latest .357s and .327s.  Different top strap and big sights.  I prefer the streamlined earlier ones.
