Here's a home 'project' I hadn't planned on!

It got really stormy and windy here in Hudson Ohio Thursday evening.  I went to the living room window and looked out just in time to see the tree heading for the garage roof. 

This'll slow down my bike riding somewhat!

A little barge rafter replacement. 

A little plywood patch. 

A little roofing patch (the worst part of the whole job). 

A little paint and you're as good as new.

Heck, you should have seen the damage when a 200 year or so valley oak fell at my place.

Also it could be worse, you could be remodeling the Kitchen.

Insurance.  That's the plan.  My roofing guy (I've used them for re-roof and T1-11 panel replacement over the years.)  They will inspect the damage Monday, prior to the insurance adjuster's site visit on Tuesday, and the company owner plans to be present when the adjuster is here.  I didn't realize until now that Ohio has a 'line of sight' law, which states that if repairs don't match the rest of the house, such as half a dozen new un-faded shingles that would stand out like a sore thumb, the entire section of shingles should be replaced.  These shingles have been on the house since spring of 2005, and are considerably lighter in color than new ones.

Just went thru this. We have several 100-year-old, 100-foot cottonwoods and last month a squall brought a couple of big branches down, punching straight through the garage roof. A foot-thick limb missed Gail's Subaru by about half an inch. Our long-unused coal shed got speared too, and the power line came down.




My daughter talked me out of clearing the wreckage with a borrowed chain saw, so I hired a tree crew. They thinned the tops of the cottonwoods which are now less topheavy and don't sway so much in the wind.

I found some used roofing steel and spent a hot day splicing rafters and patching holes.




Still have the trim work to do, and the coal shed will come down, to be replaced by a new gardening shed for Gail.

The tree crew stacked me a cord-and-a-half of firewood, so I'm in the market for a log splitter and a wood stove. The house had a stove when we bought it but it didn't make the decorating cut during the remodel. Happily the chimney remains. I want to be prepared when natural gas for the boiler is cut off.

Our insurance premiums are cheap and I want to keep them that way, so no claim filed.

I'm curious about this myself. I lost a couple of square yards of shingles in a recent storm. As a result had some water damage on the ceiling below. Shingles were old enough that they couldn't be color matched so the insurance company bought me the section of roof that was visible when looking at the damaged area. That was about 50% roof replacement. I bought the other side so I had a complete new roof.

Insurance paid about $7K. Been with them forever so that's $7K given back to me out of the $50K plus I've sent them over the years. No need for them to increase my premiums. But I reckon I'll find out next bill.

I get the elm over my house trimmed every other year.  I usually to have to pay to have my neighbors' encroaching trees trimmed as well.

Once I had a neighbor's tree fall on my house twice in a week's time.  At least his insurance paid but since the house was vacant at the time, I had to trace him through the realtor.

I rent a house from my Dad. Long story. Anyway, when they built the house, they left the three cottonwood trees that are about 50 feet from the house. 17 years later, I was doing some work around the foundation and kept digging up cottonwood roots. I had the trees removed. The three all grew out of the same fallen tree, so they shared a common root system. The largest was nearly 5 feet across at the base, and when they cut the wedge out to bring the last 45 foot section down, we discovered about 30" of the middle of the tree was gone. So much missing they roped it off and tensioned the line to keep it on line when it fell; there was not enough tree to keep it from potentially twisting when it was cut. Glad it is gone. When the wind blows, I sleep just fine.

That's their strategy ... !   Only time the home insurance ever really pays is if there's a six-figure house replacement.   Otherwise, you just pay back what you get in increased premiums ....

I had two eucalyptus in my front driveway.  The big one had a huge limb out 90 degrees hanging over the drive where I normally fit the second car.  We had forecast of a big windstorm.  So, I cleverly moved the second car forward out from under that big branch and alongside the smaller tree.  Wind storm arrived.  Took out the small tree and my car.  :-(  So much for planning.
