I went to my local pie shop to take advantage of their annual $3.14 pi sale of one of their delicious blueberry pies. But they didn't have it this year!!! So I just had to pay regular price.

My wife like wet bottom shoofly pie, me just like with scrappel having gone this far in life w/o trying no sense trying now. Besides I'm not eating anythgin made with mole asses.

Achieving the proper wet/dry in a shoofly pie is a magical thing. My wife is good, but my mother-in-law is still the best to hit that exquisite barely medium rare center. The only thing better than good scrapple from Shady Maple followed by her perfect Shoofly pie & rocking coffee for breakfast is when MIL makes stuffed pig's stomach for lunch.
All of a sudden, this bowl of oatmeal for breakfast is looking kinda lackluster...
Edit- Just mentioned this issue to my wife- she says she's planning to make a couple of shoofly pies asap to take camping. Very cool!

Hog Maw used to be a fairly regular dinner for us. Stuff and sew up the belly the night before and then into the crock pot in the morning. Get home from work slice and serve with ketchup and butter bread. Cleaned stomachs used to be a couple of dollars now they are $10 or $12 and sometimes hard to find. While I like hog maw and the stomach does add necessary flavor to what would otherwise be plain old sausage, potatoes and cabbage It something we only eat maybe once a year now.

Now I'm going to have to go to the store and see if I can find some scrapple. Fried so it has a crunchy crust and served with eggs over or pancakes, scrapple makes for an excellent breakfast. Oh, and you should have some grits with the eggs, too.

Around here you can find cut up stomach as well. Some folks throw it in the crock pot with the sausage, potatoes and cabbage as a flavorant and forgo the stuffing. It does work flavors wise but texturally it is different. Stuffed in the the maw and sliced its dryer and somewhat holds it shape and textually more to my liking verses using pieces and making a sort of hog maw soup.

Well, the swap meet yesterday was a bust. But it was great to spend the day doing bike stuff & coming home to two brand new shoofly pies. Each made me one. My wife and daughter are the best....

Think I'm good. My preferred bowl of firm oatmeal (including this morning) is done with olive oil, kosher salt, fresh oregano from my garden and a can of good water-packed tuna fish. The cats allow me safe passage out of the kitchen if they each get a share of the tuna water & some tuna.... With a few exceptions, I'm not really a sweet-breakfast fan. But even my favorite oatmeal with tuna fish is very pedestrian compared to shoofly pie.
Today was a double win- I had both for breakfast.
Life has been a lot worse.....
