Readable Oil Dip-stick for a 1400/MGX
« on: January 24, 2020, 07:15:35 PM »
Looked in archives and may have missed a thread but did come across the dip-stick/oil temp thing.
Anyway the question is can Anyone actually see what their oil level is on the black plastic POS dip-sticks on a 1400? With a powerful flashlight I still couldn't be sure where the level was. Dirty or fresh oil. Maybe it's just me and/or old age but it'd be nice to know for sure?
Any suggestions??

Lay down a piece of shop cloth or even newspaper.
Lay the dipstick on it then lift off, it's obvious where the level is at.

Thanks, I'll try that, although it would be nice just to look at it and know?

This is the ticket.  I use a white paper towel in my other hand.  Loving the oil sight glass on the V85 though!

I concur with the OP. The dipstick is ridiculous, antiquated and just not practical.  And the way they want you check the oil is even more ridiculous with the hot motor and it's almost impossible to unscrew it without pliers and burning your hands.

Do yourself a favor and get a stelvio Dipstick assembly. Easy pull out and make your own marks on it to your bike's levels. It's metal so you can see the oil level perfect and the pull out design is a step above this silly screw in design.  Best $40 or so that I spent.

Thanks, a Stelvio stick it is. I was reasonably sure I wasn't alone in my disdain for this black plastic POS. Any particular model/yr to get?

Easy fix. Sand down the ridges about half way, rounding the edges of the built in ridges. This will make the oil in the piss poor design stand out much more visible in bad lighting and old eyes.

What? You're not using the Guzzi spec white oil?
I drill a series of 1/16" holes in the plastic ones. That makes it pretty easy to see.

Yep, that would help too👍
I’ve also found that if I get in the sun light I can see the oil line a little better. However tell me more about the white oil😂

Not about the 1/16" diameter holes. That actually works.
