Title: 2018 AFT Flat Track thread
Post by: oldbike54 on April 07, 2018, 09:58:10 AM
Sorry , that nonsense at Daytona doesn't count , the real racing starts today in Atlanta (Woodstock)

Fanschoice , 2:PM Eastern . This is a fun track , they call it a short track , but it races like a fast 1/2 mile . Our FT expert tells me the latest version of the XG is better , and the Yamahas and Kawasakis should be in the hunt . Not sure if the Lloyd Bros Ducati is there , probably not .

The singles class is red hot at the moment , both Shayna and Cory Texter should be fast , and the Flying Tomato should be a contender .

Here we go fellas , let's have a great season  :thumb:

Miller does it when everyone was done and not looking.  Zarco and Danny upfront.  Espargo on Aprilia on 2nd row with Marc with Rins' Suzuki.  Rossi 4th row.

Yep , fanschoice on the web , in fact that is the only place they are broadcast live . You can also catch up on past races early in the season , once NBCSN starts rebroadcasting the races all of the main events disappear , only the heats and semis then .

Today was a much better day for racing, but it was an even better day for the Indians.  Not so good for the Ducati...  Setting up a MotoGP bike for a racing surface that doesn't give way seems trivially easy by comparison.

OK , here goes , and hopefully Danial K will be along to clean up my mistakes .

A. The dominant Indian FTR 750 runs a purpose built 750 CC 4 valve per cylinder OHC engine designed by Swissauto , really not very related to the Polarindian street motors

 B. The HD team runs a hot rod version of the new Street engine . V&H has designed some new cylinder heads and been in charge of developing the production engine into a race motor.

 C. The Kawasaki teams use a hot rod Versys motor , they seem to be losing ground now after decent success for a few years .

 D. The Yamaha teams are running a hot rod FZ 07 twin , watch for those to become very competitive .

 E. The lone Ducati is now running the 821 CC Testastretta engine .

 F. And then we still see the venerable old HD XR 750 show up at certain races and do well . They have so many natural advantages on a slick track they are still a weapon . Simply too fragile and expensive to race an entire season with , turning 10,000 RPM's on mile tracks is tough on an engine designed for 7,500 RPM's .

I doubt that Vance and Hines machine is a production engine.  Just as the V&H drag prostock "harley" which is a total billet engine.

I doubt that Vance and Hines machine is a production engine.  Just as the V&H drag prostock "harley" which is a total billet engine.

Actually it uses mostly stock castings with highly modified cylinder heads . I think the crank and rods are custom pieces , but the XG more closely sticks to the production rule than the FTR , which is a complete clean slate race motor . At least Indian is making the package available now . For that matter , flat track motors going back to the old Class C rules bore little real resemblance to production engines . All of the fast Brit twins were twingled , even the XR ran what amounted to a twingle setup for years until the AMA outlawed twingleing . I peeked inside of a BSA that Jim Rice rode , it was running a billet crank , rods , pistons , and the valves were freaky big . The last Brit twins were making nearly 60 BHP at 7,500 RPM's , Mr Edge can tell you how hard and expensive that must have been . The first iron XR motors only made about 63 HP , which was just enough of an advantage to make the Brits obsolete . It is amazing that the last versions of the XR made 90 BHP reliably , about 95 if you could afford a new crank every other race , and nearly 100 if you could carry a complete spare motor to every race , because they would go boom W/O notice . The XR that we watched Mees win with at OKC in 2016 was a freak , probably 102 BHP at 9,500 RPM's, but he could afford to race a hand grenade .

XR 750 was about as stock as the Indian FT bikes.  How many XR's did you see on the road or in dealer show rooms.  It was a purpose built racer just like the Indians.

but...the XR was originally based on the Sportster engine and although it evolved, it has the same parts in the same places so to speak..
There's a few guys riding them on the street with total loss electrics and some sort of starter rigged up.....I wanted to buy an XR engine for the same purpose but what I found for the money I had was a pile of worn out parts..

Well , kinda like the Chevy Nascar engine is based on a 350 production motor . Nothing interchanges twixt a Sportster and XR 750 motor .

Looks fine to me.  It's probably best not to get too fixated on just the engine as today everybody makes enough hp to thoroughly smoke the tires.  If that were enough then the factory KTM team (and Suzuki before them) would have run circles around everybody.  Didn't happen.  It is really, really hard to get good things to happen between the tire and the dirt.

Kind of Daniel's point , the engine must make the right kind of power , W/O resorting to electronics the way roadracers and even street bikes do now . Getting an engine to work in a dirt track racer is actually more difficult than getting 200HP out of a one liter 4 valve per cylinder engine capable of 17000 RPM's .

Yes...Actually in all forms of motorsports it's about getting the power to the race track..This is how I got my Triumph LSR bike to go faster than other bikes with more power.....
Back in 1969 Triumph put 70 HP 750 triples on the flat track figuring they would clean up on the mile tracks against the ancient 750 Harley KR side valves with 20 less HP....It didn't happen,The Triumph power deliver was spinning the rear tire and the bikes were heavy...

What I recall about the ride.  The air cleaner did interfere with my leg.  The performance was no more than my Seca 550.  But I think the XR was corked up and could've been kicked up with some jetting and exhaust.  Riding position seemed standard.  I remember the Harley folks seemed shocked that the bike's power didn't blow me away.  I didn't know that it was a special machine, I thought it was a hot rod Sportster and was disappointed that the Cafe Racer was no longer available.

This was back in '84 when Harley was coming out with the Evo and starting over.  I'd never ridden a Harley but thought they rode pretty good.  So this was the first Harley I'd ridden.  Nothing too radical from what I was riding at the time.

Road tests of the bike above when it was new... Liked the excellent handling from the new Sportster frame and effective firm brakes, great on twisty back roads. Keep in mind it's 1983..They didn't like the vibration and the compromised riding position. Lot of torque and a clunky transmission ..They all mentioned the bike needed to be steered slightly right to go in a straight line.. The bikes ran about 12.8  in the 1/4 mile and a top speed of 120...

Yep , he is well respected down here , despite his race bikes not being all that great . The announcers on fanschoice never failed to give him some recognition when he was near the front in any heat race . Maybe he can find a competitive mount and make a few races in the AFT series .

There is a young Brit running the singles series who seems to be getting better with some seat time , and the Spanish FT champ raced at Atlanta in the singles class , doing fairly well .

First mile of the season , today we find out who is who and what is what . Hoping the Kawasakis have something , they are normally good on fast tracks , although losing Howerton and Smith hurt . Maybe Bill Werner has something for the Indians .

Now we get to see how fast Shayna's Husky really is , she is bad on mile tracks

I was thinking of hitting Springfield this year but from what I've seen so far on NBCSN I'm not sure it's worth the drive. Not a lot of competition. I guess the type of finishes from years past (Chris Carr winning by inches over three other guys) are indeed a thing of the past. Great to see so many brands out there but so far no one has anything for the Indians. Having said that, I'm not giving up. Been following AFT since the glory days of Romero, Aldana, Mann and many others. I have hope that it becomes more competitive again.

Missed it, as I had to watch the local Canadian boys stir up some dust on our local 1/4 mile at Welland County.  Was the first night of racing and the weather cooperated perfectly.  Next week we host the second round of the Canadian Nationals.  Anyone local should make a point of attending and seeing some great racing.  Will have to catch the Springfield Race on the NBC replay next weekend.

Cheers, Tim

As I was leaving,a couple of guys complimented my bike, I was ready to get some air moving so said my goodbyes, but a mention of not seeing one everyday by me brought a reply of not necessarily...I didn't realize till I was on the road home it might have been you WildGuzzi flattrack guys! Got back from the race about an hour ago.  I was in the racing level at a table, all glassed in.  Strange way to see a race.  But got great drink service,  Johnny Walker and Dos X.

The best part was seeing riding buddies from different groups of folks that I know.  They were all seated around me.  Lots of nice visits and meeting friend of friends. Almost like I planned but just got some last minutes tickets.

The racing was really great except for the feature.  I will say I enjoyed Shayna giving it a run and she is by far the most popular given the cheers.  Mees was on another level, a riding display.

One of my favorite half miles , nothing like a pea gravel surface . Maybe we will see something besides an Indian win tonight , Briar Bauman put-it-on-'em last year .

Oh , and GOOOOOO Shayna .

PS , spare a thought for Parker Norris .

1st heat she cut off Wells to get 1st.

A great deal of credit is due Jared Mees for the condition of the track; it's the best I think I've ever seen at Lima.  The prep crew was out there after every race.  Every one of them.  They put down water, raked the dirt from the outside lines down to the inside line and then followed that with more water and a final sweep.  The same routine every time the equipment was exactly suited to what they needed--and all the pickup truck drivers who were pulling the equipment knew what was expected.  It was a professional a job as I've seen.  And, all the extra time paid off with a track for the final race that was in very good shape.

I hope other tracks pick up on how it was done at Lima.  Don't ever let the track get ahead of you; once that happens, you cannot recover and it will all go downhill.

The winner was mostly expected, but there were a number of battles all the way back that were worth watching.  Those racers are brave.  A few ran out of tear-offs, and when that happened, their race was mostly over.

Watching from outside turn one, you learn to put your head down when Baker comes by.  Even so, I ended up with a fair amount of gravel down my shirt.

No Ducati at Lima, but expect a healthy Stevie Bonsey to be at Springfield.

Daniel , maybe we need more active racers as promoters . The track did look well groomed , there isn't much way to control the dust on a pea gravel track W/O drowning it in water . Waiting on photos.

the LBM Ducati is being shipped to West Sussex to participate in the Goodwood Festival of Speed.  The Indian team will be there, too (and, some others).  Unfortunately, there won't be any flat track racing (not even a demonstration), but the boys (and Shayna) will at least be able to charge up the hill-climb road and make lots of noise.  The real point is to wave the flag of flat track for the rather upscale crowd that is always at Goodwood.  AFT is doing a good job pushing the series out from its existing fanbase (of old guys).

No team in American roadracing can match the salary Polaris pays Mees . Once again , he is 32 years old , so he goes to some American team and pavement races for less money than he makes now , and probably doesn't win anything , stays for say 2 years , then is 34 , who signs a 34 year old racer to a big contract ? He is a very good dirt tracker , that does NOT mean success on pavement , remember the French MX champion who tried that ?

guys, you might put a wet towel on your heads and putout the flames.   :violent1:

I was thinking, speculating, wondering aloud, that Mees might be the best American racer and it would be cool to see him have a chance on pavement for a bigtime opportunity.

But I should've known that any pontification here regarding motorcycle racing might cause folks to grab the xanax to get over a severe case of the vapors.

Brings to mind our local guy, Danny Eslick. He'll race anything on two wheels, at a very competitive level. But it's very hard to go to different types of racing and immediately excel. It takes an enormous amount of time and hard work to dial in a top level program.

Had Mees focused on road racing early, no telling how high he could have gone, because he obviously has a special gift for the flat track racing he has focused on.

Less than a week until the Peoria TT.  :thumb: 18 August

We get to see if Henry Wiles can keep the streak going.

Personally I'm not a fan of the "new improved" jump. I suppose they had to come up with something for the twins as they are not allowed to run singles in the top class there anymore. Who, in their right mind, wants to launch 130 feet on one of those anyway? Then keep doing it 24 more times.

And, Guzzistajohn, nice picture of Nicky Hayden on the XR. One of my favorites.

Personally I'm not a fan of the "new improved" jump.

The new jump is more like the original old jump; it's been changed several times over the years.  The idea is to keep today's twins (with 50% more power than the last time the twins ran this track) from jumping right into the creek.  If that were to happen, that would be the end of the Peoria TT on the national circuit.

I wish there were a way to make the track twice as wide as it is.  But, the bowl that it sits in pretty much limits what can be done, without a great deal of effort that would ruin the attraction of the place to many people who love it.

So, it remains what it is: nice people, great organization, great food, great heritage, horrible track.

It's not listed in the 2018 rulebook as approved, but who knows?  These things have been shown to be flexible.  The expectation is that any changes in the rules for 2019 will be towards a 750cc limit and I don't know that Aprilia makes a 750 version of the Dorsoduro these days, do they?

I thought I would check in with you all.  I am kicked back on the balcony with a clear view of the Austrian Alps.  Ernberg. I've got the Dead & Co playing on the speaker.  A great leftover lunch, sandwich, some dried sausage that makes a beefstick look like garbage, some great red wine I bought at their Aldi (5.99 E), and a Partagas cigar.  Like they say, it don't get any better.

The tour has been walking our asses off.  This afternoon was the only rest day and tomorrow is Venice.  Went to the local pool after seeing King Ludwig's castle.  I was the king of the Luge riders, much better than any rollercoaster, you actually have lean and brake it. The group was saying that my Guzzi sized body gave me an advantage with extra initeria.  Told them "not true, If you have to brake, you ain't using the inertia God gave ya."

Saw my first Guzzi at Ludwig's today, Stevlio.  The Dutch, tightwads, seem to like 20 year old sport bikes, kept like we keep ours (rain and no garages?).  The Germans ride anything but there are plenty of Panzer Beemers and a few Mulitstardas in the mix.

Internet is spotty, time is shorter.  My cell phone is only good an MP3 player, the most important thing.

Time to pack and to think about a late meal or beer. But the wine has left me stationary.....

Give the Guzzi community my best

I thought the Minnesota mile was a decent race even if it was mostly a Polaris Ind. party. Having Other brands salted in the twin final was a plus. My dear wife was a good sport enduring the invigorating 40 degree  evening. We even looked at a California 1400 Touring in Eden Prairie earlier but no demo ride. Hope some of you were among the 5000 who were there.

heats were cancelled and only semis run due to number of entries.

First they did it cuz of rain, then cuz of #s.  Hope it doesn't become the norm.

...along with everybody else.  As a provisional card can't be used to put a rider into the main, the event is one-and-done no matter what trivial thing happens.

Lots of great racing on the last race, the fans were delighted w/showmanship of the riders. Kenny retires.

Pretty neat deal to race close to NYC.

I hope next year, the winner rides into Times Square.  When we see a the winner's podium and a thousand bikes parade downtown, then we'll know bike racing is big time.
