Cables
« on: November 29, 2021, 01:03:40 PM »
Hello all.

What is your experience with throttle and clutch cable life? I worry a little about the throttle cables on my V7 Loop, if they snap is it always at worst possible location on the road. Like heavy rain in traffic or similar.

Where is the weak spot on these cables? The splitter, the cable from the bar or the shorter cables to the carbs from the splitter?

Open the splitter up and lube?

All advices are welcome.  :boozing:

The cables on my 67 V700 are the originals off my 68 V700 or 69 V700, can't remember which. I put them on in 93 to go to WI Guzzi rally. I lube the splitter, and cables with Slick 50 lube in a can. Grease the barrels on cable & throttle chain & tube. Grease ends on clutch cable both ends. That spray is OK for newer cables w/inner sleeve also and use it on all but Tach & speedo. Those I use anti-seize.

The cables on my 72 Eldorado are fine, it has a small chain around the throttle to convert to a straight pull on the cable so not much strain there.
The cables on my 2017 V7 Special however are a different story, the return cable rusted through in several places before 3 years was up.

Clutch cables generally take on a lot more while throttle cable pulls are lighter. Most failures occur at the barrel end by the lever because the barrel stops rotating and the cable has to bend. A little grease on the barrels and lever will dramatically prolong cable life. The /5 eats clutch cables more quickly so I zip tie a spare alongside.

You mean like this one?  I figure the first four strands lasted 4,000 miles, I should get 2,000 more out of the last two!

The loop should be easy to ride if a throttle cable goes (depending on where), lift the cable out of the adjuster on top of the Delorto and sit it on the edge gives you about 20% throttle.
You could also switch the enricher cable over to the slide and ride home that way. Really though I think you have little to worry about.

Brings up memories. My /5 ate cables something awful. I tried various mods but nothing helped much. I could not get rid of the clutch cables bending at the lever.

^^ THIS^^ I've had a throttle cable on the CX100 for 15 years or so. I'll bet if I took it off it would break the 1st day!

You have to watch that the cable ends in the splitter barrel don't get twisted on assembly.

On the /5. I had problems with the barrel sitting right. I found that the hole in the lever had worn out where the barrel pushes up against. New lever, no problems.

For the Loop. If your that worried about cables, get a Tommaselli Daytona (I think) 2C and the pair of cables or 3. If one breaks, you don't have to pull the tank to install a new one and also if 1 breaks, the other will still open the 1 carb to get you at least off the road and maybe even home.

Cable lube. Do it!!!!!!! Everybody lubes the cables differently. I have the Motion Pro with the two thumb screws. Works way better than the old one with 1 screw. I now see there are knock offs of it at a cheaper price.
