Normal Wheel Spin
« on: October 06, 2022, 04:42:13 PM »
New to me 07 Norge with 48K on it as some of you know.  I pulled off wheel to replace front tire (Dunlop Road smart 3)  when I replaced the wheel and everything torqued correctly I spun the wheel, of course off the ground, and ONLY get 1/2 wheel spin.  Is this normal?    Loosened the calipers and I get 2-3 spins so I know the axle and wheel bearings are OK.  Loosened the axle nut and brakes and axle pinch bolts to jostle the bike up and down on the forks with brakes held.  No change no matter what I do.  I wonder if the pistons are not returning normally?  The pads are in great shape almost new but have 10K miles on them when I looked at the service record.   Any insight or recommendations?

I guess going for a ride and seeing if they get HOT or smoke?  How hot is too hot?  Thanks...

I'd say it is normal for the pads to drag a little when first rebuilt.
First you look where it should be, then you look where it might be, then you look where it won't be, then you look where it mustn't be.  And when you find it you discover "that's where it should have been."

are the calipers centered over the rotors?

I'd say, clockwise when viewed from the throttle side of the bike......

That makes no sense at all.

Might not be bad idea to treat them like radial calipers and have caliper brackets slightly loose, spin front wheel pretty good then apply front brakes. Hold- then torque calipers.  See what that does

Tried that and every other combination of tightening axel, pinch bolts and calipers...  Rear wheel spin feels the same but that has a shaft gear attached to it so not the same.
I just hope It is near normal and I don't melt the disk or cause any other problem that might be catastrophic to me or Hi-Ho Silver.  I took a video with my iphone .mov file but cannot upload to the forum?

And the beat goes on....

Did you leave the pads in the calipers or remove and replace? If removed, they may be marginally worn differently so now rub. The rotors are designed to pulse a bit, and have some drag, so it is normal for there to be light drag in spots. Rarely will the wheel spin freely. I wouldnt be worried unless it is so tight it wont turn with effort.

That makes no sense at all.

Counter clock wise when viewed from the throttle side of the bike means you are going backwards.

Much harder to balance and the steering geometry goes to hell in a hand basket....

unbolt the caliper from the mounting lugs.
squeeze the brake lever really, really hard a few times.
grab the caliper by hand.
rotate the caliper perpendicular to the plane of the rotor (you are using the rotor to pry the pads apart).
if there is now clearance between the pads and the rotor, the pads have backed up into the calipers and you are good to go.

alternatively, you could simply push the caliper towards the disc from either side to retract the piston on the pushing side.

if you can move the pistons with "hand force," I would consider it fine.

Sorry you did not catch the humor the first time around.

Mate..
If you do everything that I outlined in the schedule, that problem will disappear.
Part of the treatment is to remove the pads and clean them or replace and make sure the bobbins are letting the disc self centre.
If it’s the rear wheel, you’ll find that the pins that the caliper sides on, are DRY…! Lightly grease them and..voila..!

I’ll elaborate of necessary, but it’ll come down to trying to short circuit the maintenance…..(just do it…)

I removed  pads to clean the caliper pistons and could quite have placed back differently, as you said.  That is a good idea and I will check that this morning.. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for adding how to test the pistons and seals. -  Will try that as part of RE-DO this morning wheel removal and re install.

After Repeated caliper removals, cleaning of pins, pads, greasing, piston cleaning, bleeding of brakes and disk bobbin spinning I have now effected good brakes and that the pistons move in and out evenly tells me no further investigation or maintenance is required,no matter that I "ONLY" get 1/2 - 3/4 wheel turn when I spin it while on the center stand.  Thanks for all the input fellow Guzzi-ista's.. *
