35 liters of capacity per side seems to be the sweet spot for bags. I set mine up with liners, putting all the bike's stuff (tools/spares) and shoes on one side and clothes and sundries on the other. I have a soft tailbag for my rainsuit and flat repair stuff and my tank bag for my phone/water/maps/spare glasses. My travel clothing goes in a 22 liter Ortlieb dry bag on the passenger seat. For most nights, I only need to remove the dry bag and tank/tail bags making reloading a breeze.

I use HB 40L alloy boxes.  No wider than the handlebars and they have a useful flat top.
They look better in real life than in the photos, are top loading, waterproof and can be used as a table when off the bike.  I have sprayed them inside with a white alloy primer and stuck white plastic on the lids so that there is no black aluminium marks on things.  I got rid of the front handles at the top as they interfered with the co-pilots legs.
As they are alloy they are single walled so maybe less wasted space compared with twin walled plastic boxes?

Depends on the helmet. Some larger ones are tight in mine. My older 45L Junior topcase works much better for that.

Actually it's been a while but I think the 40L Junior sidecases were the same (some helmets won't fit).

The 55L Junior topcase that replaced the 45L will take two helmets, even Size-L modulars.

Thanks all for the additional info and thoughts.

Tom, I liked those eBay boxes you posted the link for!  I'll have to contact the guy, it looks like he may do fabrication for mounts on various bikes.  Heckuva deal at $90 (a box I'm assuming).

Redhawk, thanks for the Caribou info, I'll look at their site too.  I've seen them mentioned highly various places like ADVRider.

Andy, which model of HB box is that?  XPlorer or something else?  Those 40L look pretty good.  Those and some handguards like barkbuster and I wouldn't even need engine guards.  Do they hit the exhaust?

Unfortunately it also makes a V7 look as UGLY as a WRX STI!

Careful with some of those Mutazu or whatever Ebay bags. We had a bud who put a set on a W650, they were absolutely pieces of thin plastic garbage (besides being about as ugly as possible).

Good to know.  They are really cheap which is the attraction but obviously you often get what you pay for.  I don't want disposable side cases but I'd prefer to not take out a loan either.

My alloy boxes are Hepco-Becker Alu Standard ones fitted on HB mounts that are designed for the MG V7.  They fit really well, are tight against the bike and far enough above the exhausts not to give any heat problems.  I also use them on my BMW R100R. Not cheap but worth the money.  If you click the image it opens wider.
The tops of them are level with the seat so I can strap on a bag.

I'll agree that the Junior 40L look huge on the V7, especially when looking at the bike from behind (saddlebag-to-tire ratio is way off). But the functionality/flexibility of the 40L is awesome, especially as the additional width can help you keep the heavy stuff lower/more forward. They crash quite well too, as I unfortunately found out, and the extra width protects your bike/your legs at the moment of initial contact.

For a video perspective of the size, a review of the function, as well as an additional opinion on the 55L Junior Topcase (overkill, I know) please feel free to check out my YouTube review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shFdVatD8PA
