Stebel Nautilus on a Norge, Where will it fit.
« on: April 09, 2015, 06:12:48 PM »
Hello Norge People.
I bought a compact Stebel Nautilus for my Norge as the bleat-bleat horn is ridiculous. I saw a pic on Amazon of this horn mounted at the stock location on a CARC bike but when I hold it in that spot it's too close to the fender. I'm sure it will hit on a hard stop.
So I'd like some feedback on what others have done with this particular horn.

Thanks, Hunter

I am interested too, as I have just ordered one for my Norge.  I am tired of sounding like a scooter.
My plan is to make a mount up in the fairing some where, but I am waiting to get the horn before working it out.
Alternatively may be a custom brace across the timing cover using two bolts.
if you get yours mounted before I do post pics!   :PICS!:

My Norge had one tied into the left-side coil mount.  It was dead (I hear that these things fail quite regularly), so I replaced it with a set of dual Fiamms, mounted in the same place, one on each side.

I can pull the appropriate panel off my Norge in the am, take a couple pics and see if I remember how to post them. It is so worth doing. It needs a relay also I believe. If there wasn't snow still in the driveway and salt on the roads.... it might be to late ;).

I have installed a few of these in scooters and there you really have to be creative.

separate the horn from the air compressor, this make finding spots to mount each soon much easier. just run a small 1/4 " clear tube between them.

I plane to mount one on my Norge this coming week after I pick it up this weekend from Charlotte. I'll try and get some pics and what nots done.

I installed one several years ago.  Still works like a champ.

In fact, you have to be careful as it's so loud that some drivers over-react and over-correct right into your lane.   :o

FWIW, see http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=2ActHDdm5csXxw

The pix are bigger and the captions easier to read in "slideshow" mode.

No need for me to take pics, that is exactly how I did mine! Thanks Bill! I'm sure you're where the idea came from! ;-T ;-T ;-T

I was all set to install one but now that I see Bill's pics and see that the oil needs to be drained at the same time I think I'll wait.

Actually, Steve, that is only needed when installing the base model of the horn.

Thanks for all the responses and conversation on the horn.
Nice job on the mount there Bill but I wonder why a red Norge even needs a horn.  ;D
I did come up with a slightly different take on it from what BIll did. I mounted it on the right side (rather than left) in the space between the coil and the fairing. The reason for putting it here is that I wanted the outlets on the horn to aim forward and out so as to deliver what I paid for to the intended target.
I made a bracket from some inch wide strip aluminum in the shape of a giant fishing hook. I used aluminum since it is easy to shape and I had it already. When done I will use it as a pattern to make a steel one. The "barb" end of the hook is bolted to the upper right coil mount. The "line" end of the hook attaches to the main fairing mount frame on a tab right of the upper fork clamp. I took off the old horn and routed the wires back up to the top of the alternator and used them to trigger the relay. I attached the relay to the frame with a zip tie so as to keep everything rub free. Then a simple wire with fuse from the battery and wires to the horn and BLAMO my neighbors knew I had a new horn.

One thing to be aware of, install the horn/s so it's self draining otherwise it will fill with water and just emit a pathetic squeak.

Did you make sure you got the Compact Nautilus and not the regular Nautilus?

yeah, it's the compact with the ports out the front.  i guess I'm just comparing it to the moped beeper that was stock on the bike.  lol  Why did they even bother putting a horn on the bike if that's all they were gonna do?

Here was my takeaway from their marketing materials (from the Stebel link)

"Your car horn has an extremely important function, try it and let yourself be hard!"

Direct quote.

Just what else does that horn do?

Maybe that is why it doesn't fit?

I've had a Stebel for years on a previous bike, and I was told to never mount it upside down, or in any way that water would collect inside the horn (directly behind the tire). It's the water that kills them.
I still have the old horn, and I can't find a good spot to mount it on my V11S or V7C. A relay is recommended for these.

...separate the horn from the air compressor, this make finding spots to mount each soon much easier. just run a small 1/4 " clear tube between them.

Keep in mind that the longer the tube (air path), the longer the latency between when the horn button is pushed and when the horn actually sounds.  Keep the extension air tube as short as possible.

Make sure to check with the front suspension fully compressed. It gets really tight when you get on the brakes hard. Mine when fully compressed barely leaves room for my hand to fit in front of the engine. I did not want to break the fender, engine cover or horn much less bind on the wheel at an inconvenient time!
If you look at the ring of dust on the fork tubes after a really hard stop you can see and measure the travel. Now look at the position of the fender and measure away from it parallel to the fork tubes to get an idea of what the clearance would be when stopping hard or bottoming out. I cut a chopstick to the appropriate length and used it to gauge the clearance.
It's worth checking!
