Norge gas mileage
« on: June 14, 2019, 11:21:52 AM »
Yesterday morning was 49 degrees at 7:30 as I started on my journey, thank the Guzzi gods for electric hand warmers, on my O7 Norge, a bright sunny day and about 8 mph side wind. I had about 20 miles on the tank, I made my appointment 70 miles away, by 8:10 having been slightly delayed by construction and a 5 minute wait for a train (with the engine off) the ride on the freeway 78-80 mph, nice but chilly ride. When I started the 70 mile return ride home I looked at gas gauge and noticed I was 1/2 tank, this was surprising, but I took off. Since I had the time I took the long way home on back roads, but about 30 miles latter as I was going thru a small town with only a bar,church, and gas station, checked the gauge ,less than 1/4 tank,so I stopped and filled up. Only 35.5 miles /gal. Normally I’m getting 40 mph. So here’s the question do the hand warmers on high result in decrease gas mileage? Or should I start looking for things not set right. I should mention the weekend before I was getting 40, but I was riding without hand warmers.
Thoughts?
Thanks

Hand warmers won't make any difference on fuel mileage. By the way my Breva has never gotten anywhere near 40mpg. Normally 48 or more, Last 300 miles was 50.8 with the saddle bags on.

Ridden unrealistically slowly, my Norge will get as low as 4.5 l/110 k but in real world conditions, about  4.8-5.3 l/100 k.

drdwb It's a 2007 Breva 1100 but it has the fast red color so that maybe the difference.

It can’t be the heated grips.  One horsepower is 745 Watts.  So if your heated grips drew 100 watts, that’s a loss of 0.13 horsepower.  Not enough to make a detectable difference in gas mileage.  And that’s assuming you could “recover” that lost 0.13 horsepower by turning the grips off, which I don’t think you can; certainly not 100%.

Colder weather lowers gas mileage more by increasing the viscosity of the oils and greases, lowering your tire pressure, etc.

I’ve tracked my gas mileage regularly on all my bikes.   I lose about 10% of my mileage in colder weather. Sometimes there is a noticeable drop for no apparent reason—maybe a different fuel blend?

I would not worry about a one time drop.   Monitor it, and if the problem is persistent, then find a solution.
Accentuate the positive;
Eliminate the negative;
Latch on to the affirmative;
Don't mess with Mister In-Between.

Mine os a 2008 2 valve.
At 65MPH by myself I usually can expect 45MPG US Gallon. When I drive faster the mileage will go down.
I just finished a 3 day ride with my wife on the back and I got 43MPG on the last tank. (210 miles)

When I had my 08 on the trip to Canada from Florida, we routinely got 48-52mpg cruising at 65-70 mph.  In town driving I would get 41-42.  Everything was set to factory stock specs.  No mapping, stock exhaust, etc.
My 08 Breva Sport only gets 42-44 mpg on the highway.  Mistral muffler, different mapping and still sputters and pops on roll off.
How long since your last tune up?

My 07 seems to do better at higher cruise speeds. In general, I stopped caring.  wFO. :copcar:

Its the same with my 16 Griso. If I get 40 mpg, that doing pretty good. Sometimes its a little less, sometimes a little more, but 40 is a good average for my Griso.

Cooler temps always made my gas mileage go down as the fueling is richer.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

If traveling my 8V will be between 38-42. Can be higher under lower speeds or tail wind. City riding kills it,  upper teens to low 20s.

It is probably as simple as the fact that you didn’t truly top it off at the last dueling. To get a realistic idea of mileage, you need to average out several tanks. Topping it off now and shorting on the next will give bogus highs and shorting now but topping off on the next will leave you thinking that you are getting 35 mpg.
